INDIANAPOLIS — Bland replaced bravado when Jason Garrett stepped to the podium following Rex Ryan at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Minutes after the bombastic New York Jets coach guaranteed his team would win the next Super Bowl, Garrett was asked if he could do the same.
“I cannot do the same,” the Dallas Cowboys coach said with a smile. “We certainly all want to compete and participate and win a Super Bowl, but we are going to be more focused on the process along the way.”
For sure, it was typical, boring stuff from Garrett. But in making his first public comments about the coaching staff he recently assembled, Garrett gushed about another Ryan who isn't afraid to speak his mind.
That would be Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, Rex's twin brother.
“We hit it off well right away,” Garrett said Ryan, who spent the past two seasons with Cleveland.
Ryan vowed last week that the Cowboys would have one of the NFL's top defenses next season after being one of the worst in franchise history last season. He even went so far as to boast that he would do a “great (expletive) job.”
But rather than blanch at such bravado, Garrett gave it his blessing Thursday.
“I think anytime you're around people who have confidence, that's a good thing,” he said. “You want confident people. You want people to believe in themselves.”
The trim, short-haired Garrett said he's felt comfortable with Ryan, who sports a big belly and wildly flowing gray hair, from the start.
“He came into my office, and he had on a coat and tie and his hair was nicely combed. He looked good,” Garrett said. “But we started talking football and about three minutes into our conversation, I'd never seen a guy who wanted to get out of a coat and tie more than this guy. So I said, ‘Rob, just take the thing off.' He literally went boom, got rid of the tie, grabbed a pen and started writing on the board.
“I was impressed by the coat and tie, and I was equally impressed by him getting rid of it and getting going and really being who he is.”
From a football standpoint, Ryan is all about running a 3-4 scheme that blitzes from start to finish.
“You can expect every blitz from about everywhere,” Baltimore coach John Harbaugh said of Ryan's style. “You will not know where they are coming from.”
COWBOYS TO INTERVIEW NEWTON: Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton will be among the 60 players Dallas will interview at the combine, Cowboys vice president/personnel director Stephen Jones said.
“This is what we do every year,” Jones told ESPNDallas.com. “You got to do all your work because you never know what's going to happen in a draft. It's part of doing your diligence as a personnel department. You can never assume anything, and you can't leave any stone unturned.”
The Cowboys possess the ninth overall pick. They haven't selected a quarterback in the first round since they nabbed Troy Aikman with the No. 1 pick in 1989.
