Orlando Scandrick gets two-year extension, giving him $9 million in guarantees; Cowboys get cap relief

Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick signed a two-year contract extension through the 2018 season, according to multiple sources. He signed the deal in November, before the Giants game.

Scandrick, who has had his best season in his six seasons since the Cowboys drafted him, gets $9 million more in guarantees. Scandrick signed a six-year, $28.2 million deal, with $10 million guaranteed, in 2011.

The deal gives Scandrick guaranteed money and the security of knowing he will be on the team the next three years, while it gives the Cowboys a chance to get some badly needed cap relief over the next two years.

"It made sense for both of us," Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said on KRLD-FM on Friday. "When you sign guys to long-term deals, which we did with Orlando about three years ago, the back end of it is usually pretty heavy. Orlando wanted to stay in Dallas, and we were able to restructure something that helped us a lot and also gave Orlando what he wanted to have, which was some security, and of course, it meant a lot for him to stay here in Dallas, so it worked good for everybody."

Scandrick had $1 million added to his base salary in 2014, upping it to $4.5 million. The Cowboys the ability to turn that into signing bonus and bring down his cap number for 2014. His base salary in 2014 has been lowered from $5 million to $3 million, which also helps the Cowboys against the cap.

When the dust settles with all the guaranteed in place, Scanrick will have received $21.7 million from Aug. 2011 through 2016.

Scandrick, who replaced Morris Claiborne in the starting lineup Week 2, has been the team's best cornerback in 2013. He has started 12 games this season, posting career highs in tackles (59), passes defensed (14) and interceptions (2).

Way to go, Jerry. Your defense is playing like shit and you reward them for it by giving them extensions?

I'd give'em a box of donuts for their performances.

I don't like it, but I don't dislike it.

If given the choice:

A. Wasting two draft picks on a CB like Claiborne a missing out on LB Wagner, and DE Brockers

B. Wasting $50 million on a mediocre CB in Carr

C. Giving Scandrick a guaranteed $9 million

I'd rather have C. If A and B were not in place, then C wouldn't look so bad.

I would put their checks in empty boxes and have the staff take a crap on each one.
