IRVING, Texas -- To many players, coaches and personnel people, Arizona’s Larry Fitzgeraldis the best wide receiver in the NFL.
Fitzgerald has 51 catches for 888 yards and six touchdowns largely because of the Cardinals’ unstable play at the quarterback position this year. He signed an eight-year deal worth up to $120 million when the lockout ended after the Cardinals traded for Kevin Kolb.
At 4-7, this is not the season Fitzgerald imagined.
“I don’t live with regrets,” Fitzgerald said. “I’m a man. Once I make my mind up and make my decision, you live with it. You accept the good or the bad. It’s like a marriage. That’s what’s wrong with America now. We divorce too easily. You’ve got to stick it out and fight. This is what I signed for.”
In 2008 Fitzgerald nearly won Super Bowl XLIII with a long touchdown, only to see Pittsburgh win it on a last-minute TD pass by Ben Roethlisberger. The Cardinals made the playoffs the following year, but went 5-11 last year and are unlikely to make the postseason this year even if they win their final five games.
“It’s incomprehensible to think about being that close and then coming back two years later being 5-11,” Fitzgerald said. “It’s really going the wrong direction, but we’re going to stay positive. We believe in our coaching staff here. We believe these guys have the right formula to get it going. It’s just players having to play better at the end of the day.”
