Texans Interested In Herring; Cowboys Too?
Posted by nickeatman at 1/7/2011 2:01 PM CST on truebluefanclub.com

While it’s been reported for a while that new Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips would have some interest in some of his former defensive assistants, it might be easier said than done.

Phillips and the Texans have apparently asked for permission to speak with linebackers coach Reggie Herring, but have been denied. Herring’s contract does not expire in the upcoming weeks and will be under contract for 2011. The same goes for safeties coach Brett Maxie, who has been rumored as a possible fit in Houston, although the Texans have yet to seek permission.

But since the Cowboys weren’t ready to let Herring interview, it’s likely the same answer would be given for Maxie.

And this might just be a timing issue. The Cowboys may indeed be looking to make some defensive changes, but haven’t yet figured out what. Until then, it seems logical to hang onto the assistants for now.

Good. Not that I want him on the staff, but F Phillips and the Texans.

Well, denying him likely indicates he's staying on our staff.

I'd rather he go with the Texans.

I hope it was just a middle finger in Phillips' general direction. All defensive coaches and as many as 5 defensive players should be looking for work elsewhere, IMO.

I don't think they'd disrespect a coach like that and not let him interview where he's wanted to stay here where we're planning on releasing him.

I'd have to assume he's staying.

It could be what was in the article, they need to see what else is available and also need to get a new DC in place. It could be a new DC would want Herring here.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of his and dont care if he leaves.

lol at how we're not being so open about the availability of our assistant coaches while we're trying to pry Bowles from Miami. Kind of weird.

Hunh..?

I don't think the Cowboys would be sitting there intending to possibly release Herring in the near future and then refuse him an interview somewhere else. It's disrespectful and puts that coach in a bad situation when he does get released later.

If you don't want the guy on you staff, then you let him interview while he's still got somewhere to go.
