Currently on rosterDeMarco Murray (age 23, signed through 2014)
Felix Jones (age 24, signed through 2012)
Phillip Tanner (age 23, contract status unknown)
Sammy Morris (age 34, Unrestricted Free Agent)
Chauncey Washington (age 25, Exclusive Rights Free Agent)
Tony Fiamemetta (age 25, Restricted Free Agent)
Shaun Chapas (age 23, contract status unknown)

Halfback – Time to eat some crow. I was not happy with the 3rd round selection of DeMarco Murray, who I viewed as an injury-prone, lesser version of Felix Jones. Murray showed to be much more physical than I imagined and showed he has all of the makings of a feature back. Yes, he did get injured but it was a freak tackle, which bent his feet in opposite ways and fractured one of his ankles. I fully expect him to start 2012 as our every down back.

A hungry Felix Jones showed up after Murray’s injury and he should remain hungry in 2012 which is a contract year for him. As for now, we have a great 1-2 punch that should help keep the offense balanced.

Phillip Tanner showed some promise and should return as the third running back. Sammy Morris exhibited a lot of passion but will most likely return to retirement. Chauncey Washington was a late season addition for the second season in a row and may get a camp invite. With Murray, Jones, and Tanner already locked in there probably isn’t a spot for him.

Fullback – Tony Fiammetta was a roster cut day waiver pick-up. He turned out to be a difference maker. As a restricted free agent I don’t see the Cowboys letting him get away. I expect them to make a qualifying offer and then look to sign him to an extension in the 2012 season, assuming his mysterious health issue is no longer a concern.

Whether or not Shaun Chapas returns will probably depend on Fiammetta’s health and whether or not the Cowboys want to carry a 2nd Fullback on the 53.

Draft Possibility? The Murray pick came out of nowhere last year. With Felix Jones being in the last year of his contract, I wouldn’t be shocked if the team drafted a running back, especially if someone starts to slip in the draft. Names like Oregon’s LaMichael James (5’9”, 195 4.42 40 time), San Diego State’s Ronnie Hillman (5’10”, 190 4.49 40 time), and Florida’s Jeff Demps (5’8”, 191 4.26 40 time) come to mind.

Demps or James would be awesome picks. Let them return kicks for a year then start working them into the offense more and hope one of them can do Sproles things.

Cut Washington and Morris and draft LaMichael James.

Murray, Jones, James. Keep Tanner as well.

Even with FeJo in the last yr of his deal, I'd still be a little surprised if they picked a RB this year.

But if they do, I suspect it'd be a later round guy.

Bit of an update..

Gators RB to try out for Olympics … Florida RB Jeff Demps has reportedly decided not attend the combine or any other pre-draft workout. Instead, Demps plans to devote his full energies to trying to make the U.S. 2012 Olympics sprint team. Demps, of course, will still be available at this spring’s draft and there is a chance that some team could take a flyer on him with a late round pick.

I was looking forward to seeing his 40 time at the Combine.

Yeah, that's a bummer. He would of had a great 40 time.

Oh well, hopefully we have a shot at drafting him in the 7th round.

This might make some teams shy away from him not going to the combine.
