Currently on roster
Tony Romo (age 31, signed through 2013)
Jon Kitna (age 39, signed through 2013)
Stephen McGee (age 26, signed through 2012)
Chris Greisen (age 35, Exclusive Rights Free Agent)
Starter – Tony Romo isn’t going anywhere. The usual scapegoat for angry Cowboy fans and all of the Cowboy haters, he had a remarkable season. If you take away the Jets and Lions games, there is little doubt that Romo would have had a Pro Bowl season. He improved on his costly turnovers, played through serious injuries, and showed up in big games at the end of the season when some of his teammates clearly did not. If you’re a Cowboy fan and you think Romo is the problem, you aren’t paying attention.
#2 – Kitna has a decision to make. Many expect him to retire. He has a lot of interests outside of football and at age 39 and coming off a back injury, it’s probably time to call it a career. The Cowboys then have to decide if McGee is ready to be the #2 quarterback. If he isn’t ready, we can expect a journeyman type veteran signing. Names like Jason Campbell, Shaun Hill, and David Carr come to mind. Someone good enough to win a game if needed but also someone clearly behind Romo.
#3 – If the team feels McGee is ready to be the top back-up, look for the Cowboys to spend a late round pick on a developmental guy. Personally, I like Arizona State’s Brock Osweiler (6’8”, 240 lbs) as someone we could bring in and groom to replace Romo down the line. Unfortunately, he is going to cost a 3rd or 4th round pick.
Some Day 3 names could be Northern Illinois’ Chandler Harnish (6’2”, 220), Houston’s Case Keenum (6’1”, 210), and Wisconsin’s Russell Wilson (5’11”, 210).
The Cowboys have pulled Chris Greisen out of obscurity late in the season, two years running, and he would not appear to have a future with the organization
Another name to consider is Greg McElroy. He is under contract with the Jets but with his recent public comments regarding selfish Jet players, the organization may decide to let go of their 4th string quarterback. He is the son of a Cowboys VP and if Jerry is nothing else, he is incredibly loyal. McElroy, age 23, is incredibly smart and has “Jason Garrett Guy” written all over him.
Tomorrow we’ll talk Runningbacks.
