Nine things we learned about Jerry Jones — and one we didn’t

jonesface.jpg

The Jerry Jones headlines rolled in on Thursday, when ESPN published an expansive profile of the billionaire Cowboys owner.

He was chatting on the phone with star Vikings running back Adrian Peterson about donning the silver and blue, unless he was really just talking about pig latin (ixnay on the amperingtay). And he was still ruing his decision not to draft former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, whose love for the limelight and adult beverages may even match his own.

Seemingly the only subject Jones wasn’t tackling were those salacious photos of Jones in compromising positions with two women that made the Internet rounds in early August. No explanation, nuh uh, wouldn’t touch it, letting his confusing comment that the snaps were “misrepresented” stand.

But there was so many more good nuggets in the detail-rich piece, by Don Van Natta Jr., to remember. Here’s a sample:

• Jones nearly became the owner of the San Diego Chargers in 1966 … when he was 23. Barron Hilton (Paris’ grandfather) had an asking price of $5.8 million, and Jones had investors lined up, but the AFL’s finances seemed grim and Jones didn’t go for it.

• Jones says he considered investing in a partnership with luxury brand Chanel or Cartier and using the name for the Cowboys’ new stadium in Arlington, Texas. “Can you imagine — the Chanel Cowboys? Or the Cartier Cowboys? Now that has a nice ring, a lovely ring. Pure class.”

• Jones is still not over his feud with Jimmy Johnson, 20 years later, saying he remains “damn frustrated” with the “undermining” ways of the Super Bowl-winning coach.

• Jones supports the Washington team continuing to use its Redskins nickname, referring to it as a “term of respect.”

• Jones and his wife, Gene, are avid art collectors, with new pieces piled up on the floor of his home. On the wall is an $18 million Norman Rockwell, purchased for $1.1 million.

• One of Jones’ philanthropic causes: Helping to restore a portion of Thomas Jefferson’s library to the Library of Congress.

• Jones uses a flip phone, from sponsor AT&T.

• Jones’ drink of choice: Johnnie Walker Blue Label, on the rocks. Retail price is about $200 per bottle.

• Another boozing note: The pub room in Jones’ mansion has two taps: Miller and Miller Lite.

I take comfort in Stephen Jones being one of the ones to talk Jerry out of Manzel.

Other than that, that is a depressing article that illustrates how insane/deluded Jerry is.

I get this.
After all,we can see the results Jerry generated without Johnson, they are spectacular.

The world Jerry lives in is amazing. His "honor" comment about Jimmy the other day was classless.

I actually like it. Jimmy is one of the few people in the world who tells the truth about Jerry. He was advised to tone it down a few years back to improve his HOF and Ring of Honor chances, but I doubt he sits quietly while Jerry keeps taking shots at him.

Why do people drink Miller Lite?

So horrible
I can drink most beers, but I agree; Miller Light is terrible. Luckily at the stadium the beer guys with carts have blue moon.

And the whole issue with the Jimmy thing is just more proof Jerry wants the credit of winning and doesn't care how many losing seasons it takes.

Money doesn't buy taste. Miller beer. :/
And oh how close were we from dodging this bullet in'66? If only SD inherited this jerk.

This series of stories based apparently on a series of interviews with Jerruh.... He comes off sounding like a belligerent, bitter drunk.

They're profiling him on ESPN Sportscenter right now. Hearing him talk about Jimmy and Manzel... Wow. I mean you read the article and it's upsetting as a fan, but hearing his voice and that smirk, my gosh I hate this man.

Jerry finally does the right thing (drafts Martin in that scenario) and can't stop talking about how much he wishes he did the wrong thing.

Even in hypothetical situations he's a jackass.

Exactly. It's like, you'd think after the past 20 years of shit, he'd say hey, maybe my way isn't working.

A room full of guys tells you you're wrong, coupled with you long history of being wrong. Take a hint and stfu. Still has no clue how to win in the NFL.

But... Stephen talking Jerry into releasing Owens a few years ago and into passing on JM gives me a glimmer of hope for the Cowboys post Jerry's death. Which, hopefully comes soon.

I was thinking the exact same thing

Wasn't it Stephen who went nuts over Jerry trying to sign Deion? Where they reportedly almost came to blows?
