They didnt give a reason, though Sanders believed it was cap motivated. He had been out until the last preseason game and he said Belichick released him so he "could pick which team he'd go to" rather than accept a trade to some team he didnt want to play for (translation, "we couldnt trade you")

That's most likely. They just drafted Chung (2nd round) and he was moving up the depth chart with two, good early seasons.
