More on this story Senior NFL writer for FoxSports.com, Alex Marvez, was interviewed on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday to discuss the Dallas Cowboys and new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. Here are some highlights:
What are the positives you see from Rob Ryan as the Cowboys new defensive coordinator?
Oh my goodness, so many of them. And you know that one thing that he’s going to have in Dallas that he just wasn’t able to do in Cleveland : he’s got a real front seven to work with. And talking to people with the Browns, they basically believe that there’s only one front seven player that they have that really has a future with that team and that’s Ahtyba Rubin, one their defensive lineman. He can play nose, he can play defensive tackle but the situation is so bad that the Browns are no longer even committed to playing a 3-4. They’re willing to go to a 4-3; just to give you a stat here, no Cleveland Browns defender has gotten more than seven and a half sacks in a single season since 2006 and that was Kamerion Wimbley in his one-and-done rookie year.
So, Rob Ryan has had to go ahead and do a lot with smoke and mirrors. There was only so much he could get done, especially when you look at a team, not only with a poor front seven, but a novice secondary. You know, having to work in Joe Haden, having to work in T.J. Ward, a rookie safety who had a very good year. There’s only so much you can ask of these guys to do, and so that means the front seven has to apply pressure. And you know, scheming is great but ultimately, it comes down to talent. I think you saw a little bit of that last night with New England: the fact that they did not have a marquee pass rusher really hurt them in that situation. That’s why I think Rob Ryan is going to excel with the Dallas Cowboys. Plus, you know, he’s got the type of infectious personality; guys are going to love to play for this guys.
It is a very different deal than Wade Phillips. Wade was a rah-rah guy but this is a different type of guy. I think people are going to love to play for Rob and I’ll tell you what: he’s going to absolutely delight the Dallas media with your dealings with him. It’s going to be a very interesting change of pace going forward with Jason Garrett . I would normally say that I’d be concerned a guy like Rob Ryan might even overshadow Jason because of his button down ways but you already have an owner there in Jerry Jones who hogs the spotlight as it is; Jason Garrett is used to it, I don’t think he’s going to care about Rob Ryan and the way he conducts himself.
It’s going to be interesting how Ryan deals with the Cowboys chaotic backfield. The safety play has been poor and we’ll what the Cowboys do in the draft.
But, you know, there is some young talent there. We have the kid from Indiana , Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, he’s a guy; you got to figure Alan Ball is going to get better. So that’s something there too. There are some young guys, but I’m with you, I do think they need to add another secondary impact type of player in the first two rounds of the draft, possibly in free agency. But, it’s so unusual right now with what’s going on with the collective bargaining agreement: don’t know what the situation is going to be with free agents, don’t even know who is going to be available, if there is even going to be a salary cap. I mean, it is so Wild West right now as to what the future of the NFL is; it’s really hard to talk hypotheticals and free agency. But I can talk draft; I can tell you the Cowboys better look at focusing on this in the first two rounds.
