With the memory of his nine 2010 starts fresh on the mind, a panel of NFL.com analysts have voted the Cowboys' Jon Kitna as the best backup quarterback in the league.
Pat Kirwan and Steve Wyche gave the nod to the 38-year-old Kitna, while Jason La Canfora picked Green Bay's Matt Flynn, Vic Carucci shoce Shaun Hill of the Lions and Charles Davis went with Marc Bulger in St. Louis.
Guys like Kevin Kolb, who could have an immediate future starting for another team, were not considered - only true backups. After resurrecting the Cowboys from their 1-5 opening to the season under Tony Romo to at least play competitively with him starting, Kitna proved he could still be effective last season, and his strong leadership impressed many teammates.
He finished the year with a completion percentage of 65.7 percent and threw 16 touchdowns against 12 interceptions, passing for 2,365 yards. His quarterback rating of 88.9 was the best of his career.
The idea of trading Kitna while his value is high was broached in Wednesday's mailbag, but that won't happen. With one year left on his contract, Kitna is still a very valuable player for the Cowboys.
