NFC East tug-of-war could be looming over Asomugha

Posted by Mike Florio on May 7, 2011, 5:44 PM EDT

Whenever free agency begins, and we assume it will begin eventually, the biggest name on the open market will be cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. With the Raiders not expected to be major players for his services, he could be destined to sign a major deal with a new team.

And Rainer Sabin of the Dallas Morning News has floated an interesting theory regarding Asomugha’s ultimate destination. Per Sabin, the Cowboys could try to land Asomugha, in large part to keep him from going to the Eagles.

There’s little if any concrete evidence at this point on which to base that possibility, but it’s hardly out of the question to think that the Eagles, who signed Asante Samuel on the first day of free agency three years ago, will make a play for Asomugha or that the Cowboys, whom many believe are considering parting ways with Terence Newman, would try to get in on the action.

Of course, that could attract the Redskins into the bidding. And it could prompt any other team that covets Asomugha to increase their budget for him, too.

No matter how it all turns out, Asomugha will be the crown jewel of the 2011 class of free agents. If there ever is a class of 2011 free agents.

(Assuming no CBA)

So what if we drop TNew and replace him with Aso ?

Who would be against that ?

I would, for one.

The key to fixing our secondary isn't paying a north of 30 corner riidculous money.

Rather, it comes with in improved pass rush, competent safety play, and better disguised coverages.

I would. I'd rather keep Newman. At least you're not having to enter another big contract for an old cornerback.

And I really believe it wouldn't make our defense any better. As long as we have some kind of training camp, Newman's gonna play better this year. So is Jenkins and Scandrick. They're quality players who weren't prepared last year.

I think this is media driven anyway. When have these teams ever got into a bidding war over a player? It's never happened but makes for a good read.

I'd rather we spend the money on both a defensive end and safety. Michael Huff and Cullen Jenkins would be an improvement.

Newman, Jenkins and Scandrick will bounce back and have decent seasons. Let Philly or Washington have Nnamdi and the hefty price tag that comes with it.

I really doubt we're going after N A. Especially for what the cost will be to get him.

Ryan will get more out of the CB's here than what wade got last yr, and the improved pass rush will make a huge difference. So will actually coaching with some variety in the scheme.

Wade got too much like Zimmer last yr.
