NFC doesn't have a clear favorite
October, 4, 2010
By Tim MacMahon

The Cowboys picked a good year to stumble out of the gates. Four weeks into the season, there doesn’t appear to be a clear favorite in the NFC.

Conventional preseason wisdom was that there were four legitimate contenders: the Saints, Vikings, Packers and Cowboys. None of those teams flashed championship form during the season’s first quarter.

The defending Super Bowl champion Saints are an ugly 3-1. Their wins came by a combined 10 points over three sub-.500 teams. An offense that led the league in scoring last season has been middle of the pack, averaging 19.8 points, a drop of more than a dozen.

The Packers are also 3-1. “Doesn't feel like it, does it?” coach Mike McCarthy told reporters after Green Bay had to hang on for dear life in a 28-26 win over the Lions. This came on the heels of the Packers committing 18 penalties to gift-wrap a game for the Bears.

The 1-2 Vikings, whose lone win came over the Lions, are the biggest mess of the bunch. Brett Favre’s passer rating (60.4) is stunningly close to his age with six interceptions so far, one shy of last season’s career-low total.

The Cowboys stubbed their toe in the first two games, figuring out ways to lose to the Redskins and Bears, but they went into the bye on a high. Dallas’ convincing road win over the Houston Texans provided evidence that the Cowboys can perform like an elite team.

Maybe the Falcons deserve to be taken seriously as NFC contenders. Atlanta is 3-1 with its lone loss coming in overtime at Pittsburgh. But the Falcons sure didn’t earn any style points by needing a last-second field goal at home Sunday to beat the winless 49ers.

Chicago, the other 3-1 team in the NFC, has wins over the Packers and Cowboys. But it’s pretty much impossible to believe in the Bears after watching turnover-prone Jay Cutler take nine sacks in the first half of Sunday night’s loss to the Giants before leaving with a concussion.

The Cowboys are at the bottom of the NFC East standings behind three 2-2 teams, but it’s tough not to like their odds of winning the division for the third time in four seasons.

We promised not to bring up the Super Bowl until the Cowboys at least crack .500. But anything is possible with the NFC mired in a muck of mediocrity.

One thing that's apparent to me after 4 games - The NFC East sucks.

The Eagles are about what I expected. That team can contend with quality QB play. The Cowboys are overrated. I thought the Giants would be better. That win over a fraud Chicago team doesn't impress me. And Washington still sucks.

This is about as bad as I've seen the division in quite some time.

NFCE definately is shit. The whole NFC is shit so far. Falcons seriously? Why? They lost to a good team, yet, beat two lousy teams (AZ, SF) and beat, by a luck chance, the Saints. I dont' see them any different then any other NFC team.

No team in the NFC should be taken seriously at this point.

Dallas spotted the NFC a two game head start, and they were too stupid to take advantage of it.

They might as well award us the #1 seed right now.

I am curious if this is going to be one of those years when it's wide open in both the NFC and AFC.

I still maintain that if Romo passes for over 4,000 yards and at least 26 TDs, the Cowboys will win the division. That has been the benchmark. He's already on pace for that yardage-wise with 940 yards in 3 games.

Would it be wrong to suggest that if the Vikings land Moss . . . they would be the clear cut favorite?

I think he's that much of a difference maker. Especially considering he's the perfect receiver for what Farve does - just throw it deep and keep your fingers crossed a receiver makes a play.

Green Bay hasn't looked as great as everyone thought. Losing their starting runningback and safety isn't going to help.

We have issues with the offensive line and penalties.

New Orleans has looked slightly better than average, and could easily have a losing record right now.

It's still early in the year. Hard to declare a favorite with 12 weeks to go.

But I'm afraid of Minnesota if they have Moss. Especially if Rice and Harvin come back by years end and start to click.

I was going to have Minnesota in the championship game, but decided against it when Rice and Harvin went down, I think your on to something.

That can also work against them. Because that would make Favre all the more reckless.

Another thing. If Brady couldn't get the ball to Moss, why should we think someone as reckless as Favre will? I live in Minnesota and I wonder will they return back to the "Randy Ratio". Not sure if many of you all remember that, but it was under Mike Tice. Moss was guaranteed to get one out of four passes thrown to him every game. It didn't work out so well.

Moss just doesn't scare me as much as he used to. He has even more baggage now, Farve is showing his age. Let him go. Makes no difference. Dallas is gonna wipe the floor with the Vikings.

So word is the Falcons are the best in the NFC.

Agree? or disagree?

I say Green Bay, New Orleans, Atlanta, Philly in that order.

Well . . . Green Bay plays Atlanta this week.

I'm picking Atlanta in the Pick'em League.

Take from that what you will.

I'm taking Green Bay, they are starting to get healthy and they man handled Minnesota in Minny this past week.

Clay Matthews is a freak.

Capers defense will shut'em down.

Atlanta is undefeated at home though, so it's going to be a close game.
