Alex Barron returned to the practice field for the first time since the Aug. 8 Hall of Fame Game, and the plan is for him to start Saturday against Houston at right tackle.

Before the injury, Barron took his turn at left tackle behind Doug Free. But with Marc Colombo recovering from knee surgery , the Cowboys want to look at him at right tackle. Robert Brewster earned praise from the coaches for his work against San Diego last week, but during Monday's walkthrough he split time between right and left tackle.

Barron started at right tackle in 2005-06 and 2008 in St. Louis.

Rookie Lee to get more work: Rookie Sean Lee will be the biggest beneficiary of Keith Brooking's likely absence for the remainder of the preseason.

Brooking, who has a right shoulder injury, did not practice Monday and is likely to be held out of the final two preseason games. He said that he could wear extra protection on the shoulder if this was the regular season but that the coaches don't want to push it.

And they want to get Lee more work. He was credited by the coaches with 13 tackles against San Diego.

"He did make some mistakes, but that guy was all over the field," Phillips said. "He made some plays a lot of people can't make."

Briefly: Tight end Scott Sicko (concussion) practiced for the first time since Aug. 8. ... Newcomer Martin Rucker (hamstring) practiced for the first time since joining the team last Thursday.
