For most of the assistant coaches, it’s a slower time than normal. Yes, they’re still in the office but doing more prep work and less hands-on coaching as the lockout continues.
That’s not the case for strength coach Mike Woicik, who is back to Dallas after an 11-year stint with the Patriots, where he won three Super Bowl rings. That would give him six, considering he spent six years in Dallas, winning three titles in the early 1990’s.
And that’s when Woicik met a young quarterback named Jason Garrett, who was just trying to land a spot on the roster back then.
Things have changed for both. But as Garrett tries to get his staff ready for anything that might happen in this crazy offseason, there’s not much Woicik can do anymore. All he needs is players to work with.
“This is his time of year,” Garrett said of Woicek. “This is where he’s at his busiest and working with the players very extensively in the offseason. He sees the calendar ticking a little bit and the offseason dwindling away.
“But he has his (weight) room in place and his programs in place. He had little bit of an opportunity before the lockout started to visit with some of the player and work out with them. He got a little taste of it, but certainly he’s anxiously waiting their return and hopefully that will happen sometime soon.”
