Jerry Jones: Garrett’s no longer calling offensive plays
Posted by Darin Gantt on January 22, 2013, 1:22 PM EST

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is talking to a group of reporters at the Senior Bowl as we speak, and he said he’s taking a bit of authority from head coach Jason Garrett.

According to Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com, Jones said that Garrett would no longer call offensive plays, and that offensive coordinator/line coach Bill Callahan would.

Garrett’s position seemed far from secure already, especially with his brother John leaving his staff to take a lateral move in Tampa Bay.

Coupled with the firing of defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, and interviewing guys such as former Arkansas coach Houston Nutt for unspecified positions, it would be hard for anyone to feel safe for the long-term in Dallas at the moment.

Can anyone think of a situation where this happened and it worked?

I feel like Reid gave them to Morninwheg (or maybe that was someone else) and it went really well. Maybe Whisenhunt did too before the SB. But I also feel like in most cases "stripped of playcalling duties" is the headline the offseason before you get fired.

I know that Jim Fassell took over the playcalling duties from Sean Payton and they went to the playoffs.

Maybe Jerry is trying reverse psychology here.

Would be more reassuring if Callahan were actually a good coach. The guy has bounced around the NFL and NCAA like a pinball.

Then again, the Ravens replaced Cameron with Caldwell (who I thought was a walking corpse until yesterday) and it somehow worked out brilliantly, so I guess anyone can get lucky from time to time.

We are more like the Skins than the Ravens though. This will tailspin quickly.

Someone just posted over at CZ that some ESPN guy is now reporting that Garrett is open to the idea of letting Callahan call plays.

wtf is up with all of our "done deal" reports being fucked up?

I'm excited though that elements of the WCO are going to be in the offensive gameplan now. Miles Austin should kill it.

.

Callahan career:

95-97 Eagles OL coach
98-03 Raiders as OC and then HC
04-07 Nebraska HC
08-11 Jets OC/Asst HC
12-present Cowboys OC/OL coach

5 jobs in 17 years isnt exactly "bouncing around"

Raiders as HC --> Sucked and also made one of the worst SB blunders in history
Jets OC --> sucked (not his fault)
Eagles pre-Reid --> sucked
Nebraska --> one of the worst HCs ever
Cowboys--> doomed with or without him but the OL hasn't improved so might as well give him more responsibility now?? :confused

Wish they would just go out and bring in the best OC available instead of rearranging the deck chairs here.

Also, did BB finally get thrown in prison for filming kiddie pornos or did he find a site with more than 6 posters?

Also, if you're OL sucks balls like ours, why wouldn't you switch to a WCO scheme that doesn't require your QB to stand in the pocket to get murdered on every down?

Are Garrett's feelings more important than the '13 season? I thought he'd only be happy if Callahan was the playcaller and that magically worked out.

How do we know that we aren't switching systems?

And I agree. Why aren't we switching? If it's true that we aren't

We've been running WCO elements for years now. Everyone does. And it's not like WC means all of a sudden your QB is getting the ball out instantly and you can get away with having a bad line. Case in point Philly and Green Bay in recent years, your QB is still going to get killed if the guys up front aren't sound.

The only people in the league who run what football retards think is the "west coast offense" is New England. They scheme it better than anyone and have receivers who can get open instantly.

I don't recall callahan's offense being anything like GBs and def nothing like NEs.

Either way, it would probably do wonders for all personnel on this team to speed things up and let your athleticism dictate the games over making guys like Dez run complicated timing routes while romo is ducking and dodging for his life.

Ed werder was just killing Jason Garrett on the radio.

Said he has never seen Jerry take power and undercut anyone like he has to Jason.

Is it true I don't know.

Are we ever going to win again? No. Jerry is making sure of it.

knock it off theebs. when you get sad I get sad then we're all sad.

It's a sad time.

U take ur drugs.

I will rely on whiskey and my vinyl.

Jerry is off his rocker. He needs to go away and let the football people handle this, instead he is the voice he is the guy in charge.

Is there a sea world in Oxnard?
