I think I've digested enough of these draft guides over the last week to figure out what would be my ideal, but still realistic, draft class.
There's been much talk about the Cowboys trading down. But not much discussion about trading down twice.
I don't want to get cute and move away from an impact player. I don't believe you trade just to trade. But if your board tells you you can get the same kind of player moving down, I don't know why you wouldn't. As long as the interest is there with other teams, and I think it will be.
So, I'm completely fine with Tyron Smith at 9. Franchise LT. A legit one, unlike Doug Free. But that wouldn't be my ideal scenario. Because I believe there's another T in this draft who also can be pro bowl quality and if you pair that player with the other players you'll get with the extra picks, I think it trumps even a Tyron Smith at 9.
So....that's my thinking. If that T wasn't there I sure as shat wouldn't move out of the top 10.
Here goes....my dream scenario but doing my best to keep it within reason of being a possibility next week.
There are two blue chip WRs in this draft. That's a league wide consensus. The top two and then a big drop off to a few borderline 1sts/probably early 2nd round picks. A.J. Green will be gone within the top 6 picks. That makes Julio Jones a prized commodity. The St. Louis Rams need a big time #1 wideout to put the finishing touches on their new offense. They need a TE too, but they can worry about that later. They must get Bradford his lead receiver. Washington stands in the way of this happening. A QB at 10 will be a reach. Could happen but I don't think St. Louis can take that chance. They must get in front of the Redskins to secure Julio Jones.
So the Rams ship picks 14, 78 and 145, their 1st, 3rd and 5th round picks, to Dallas for pick 9.
We're now at pick 14. Our guy is still there. Will more than likely still be there 5 picks later. Cameron Jordan's also still on the board and the San Diego Chargers covet him. But they have the New England Patriots right in front of them and he makes a great deal of sense with that pick. The Chargers have the extra ammo to make a move without sacrificing a draft class and choose to ring up Valley Ranch with a fair offer.
So the Chargers send picks 18 and 61, their 1st and their second 2nd round pick acquired from the Jets for Antonio Cromartie, to Dallas for pick 14.
Now we're in prime position to do what we need to do. Since this is a dream scenario, I'm gonna have guys fall where I need them on the board, but not to the tune of 2nd round projections being there in the 4th round. That's not realistic.
1(18) Gabe Carimi T Wisconsin
2(40) Ben Ijalana T Villanova
2(61) Will Rackley G Lehigh
3(71) Ras-I Dowling CB Virginia
3(78) Kenrick Ellis NT Hampton
4(110) Akeem Dent ILB Georgia
5(143) Ahmad Black S Florida
5(145) Pat Devlin QB Delaware
6(176) Cedric Thornton DT Southern Arkansas
7(220) Alex Linnenkohl C Oregon St.
7(252) Andre Holmes WR Hillsdale
Initially I balked at drafting OL with the first three picks, but that's where the value is at and our need is across the board. Carimi walks in as the RT on the all rookie team next year. Ijalana and Rackley compete at G. After that we get a 1st round injury prone talent in Dowling who may end up playing safety, a true NT to give Fat Rob more options with his schemes, Sean Lee's partner in crime in Dent, Ahmad Black....an overachieving leader in the secondary who is being pushed down the board not by game film but workouts, and four nice developmental prospects to close out the class. Devlin, Thornton and Holmes need time in this step up in class, Linnenkohl's marginal with his size limitations but at that point in the draft you're scraping the bottom of the barrell and the guy has produced against top competition. Maybe he can sit behind Gurode for two years and you might have something.
It's an aggressive OL makeover but without sacrificing an entire draft class to do it. You're still addressing other areas of the team with substantial prospects.
