Source: Smith, Jenkins may play vs. Jets
Initial reports were that Tyron Smith would miss 2-4 weeks with a hyperextended knee.
IRVING, Texas - It looks like the Dallas Cowboys may have avoided a major scare Wednesday as both right tackle Tyron Smith and cornerback Mike Jenkins received favorable MRI results after suffering knee injuries in practice. Smith and Jenkins have a "real shot" at playing Sunday if their knees respond well in the morning, according to a source.
There were initial reports that Smith would miss 2-4 weeks with a hyperextended knee. The injury occurred toward the end of practice. Jermey Parnell, who spent last season on the Cowboys practice squad, would take over at right tackle if Smith can't go. Jenkins is backed up by Alan Ball, who started most of last season at safety.
Quarterback Tony Romo has expressed trust in his young offensive line, but the prospect of playing behind so many inexperienced players can't be comforting. If Parnell starts, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett would likely have to change his game plan and focus on quicker routes.
