ARLINGTON, Texas -- The big numbers for Cowboys rookie running back DeMarco Murray were the 253 rushing rushing yards, which set a franchise record for a game. He also scored on a 91-yard run, the second longest in franchise history.

Murray was close to getting some other numbers.

His effort marked the 10th best rushing day in league history. Minnesota's Adrian Peterson has the record at 296, set in 2007. It was the second most rushing yards for a rookie in league history, and Murray became the first Cowboys rookie to get over 100 yards since Marion Barber earned 127 in 2005.

"It's unbelievable," Murray said of being in the record books. "It is just a humbling experience. I never thought in a million years that I would be here with the Dallas Cowboys, Emmitt Smith. It is a great day by the offensive line. It is a great team victory."

Murray's 91-yard score was probably one of the more explosive plays of the season.

Out of a three-receiver set, Murray got a delayed handoff and busted through the hole as strong safety Darian Stewart fell down as he tried to support the run. Murray changed direction in the secondary, forcing free safety Quintin Mikell to lose him. With Dez Bryant as an escort, Murray scored with ease.

"It was wide open," Murray said. "A bus could have gone through there. The offensive line did a great job. [Tony] Romo did a great job of getting the safety out of there with a little patience. It was wide open."

Murray also set a franchise record by averaging 10.1 yards per carry with more than 20 carries in a game.

The previous record was held by Tony Dorsett, who averaged 8.9 yards per carry on Dec. 4, 1977, on 23 carries.

Amazing day for Murray. All the people that hate him and think he was a waste sure are quiet.

I had us taking Murray in the fourth round in my Cowboys mock for this site. You're right, a lot of fans hated the pick in the 3rd.

There's no doubt Murray starts the rest of the year. He's proven he can run in this league.

I was one of those guys. I love eating crow when critical of the team.

That said... I still have concerns about his durability, which was my sole concern when we drafted him anyway. Can he stay healthy?

No idea but i hope so. The rams are pitiful, but he still broke tackles And ran hard. Will be great if it continues and we get Felix back.

He ran better than any back I've seen in Dallas in years. Every carry looked like it had to the house potential.

I'm off the FJ bandwagon (although I was never really on it). I'm tired of always hearing how talented he is. He can't stay healthy to save his life, so he'll never reach his potential.

I thought it was a good pick as I liked Murray comming out of a solid program like Oklahoma. I figured he could contribute right away.

Felix can be great sometimes but he always ends up running into the back of the Linemen. His vision is always what I questioned. Murray had good lanes and great vision yesterday.

Felix will start again, no doubt in my mind...and I would disagree with it.

I did. I wanted Rackley, and felt that Murray would have been there in the 4th.
