1(14) Mark Barron, S, Alabama
For years safety play has killed us, but Mark Barron's drafting solves that. No more isolating our strong safety with the TE, bad balls are now open to being picked off, our 50 mil investment Brandon Carr now has backside help and the rest of the secondary has the player to line everybody up pre-snap. Immediate starter from a complex, Alabama defense. Among other things, offers a much needed presence in the box.
2(45) Derek Wolfe, DL, Cincinnati
A couple of years ago, I wanted Dallas to draft Connor Barwin out of Cincinnati. This year, we rectify that mistake by taking Wolfe from his alma mater. Reminds me of Aaron Smith, an overachiever type with more athleticism than given credit for. His 3 cone and 20 yard shuttle times ranked near the top for DTs this year. Also has the ability to play any position along the Dline, a trait which will most certainly endear him to Rob Ryan.
3(81) Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin
Every year a player slotted in the 1st 2 rounds suffers a precipitous slide on draft day for a number of reasons. I think this year it's Konz, which is Dallas' immediate gain. Solves the all-important center issue for the next 5 years.
4(113) TY Hilton, WR, FIU
I've been in love with Hilton as a prospect for a long time. One of the top returners in this draft who has a lot of Mike Wallace/DeSean Jackson in him with his ability to stretch defenses. So when I found out Dallas invited him for a pre-draft visit, I knew I needed to add him to my mock. Becomes an immediate slot receiver for us and gives us 3 vertical type receivers.
4(135) Cyrus Gray, RB, Texas A&M
Felix Jones is set to be a free agent and DeMarco Murray is somewhat of a durability question mark. Cyrus Gray offers a 3-down skill-set and is very unselfish with splitting time in the backfield.
5(152) Jake Bequette, DE, Arkansas
Jason Garrett recently has spoke of adding players with ego. Reading PFW's scouting report on him, they said that Jake thinks he's better than he really is. We talked to him at the Senior Bowl, where he was moved to OLB in drills and ended up slowly acclimating himself there and doing very well, all things considered. At the Combine showed surprising athleticism. Reminds me of Jarret Johnson, who was a fellow underrated SEC pass-rusher.
6(186) Ron Brooks, CB, LSU
Stuck behind very good corner prospects on LSU's defense for much of his time there. Played every cornerback position and tested very well at the Combine.
7(222) Adrian Hamilton, OLB, Prairie View A&M
Invited to Dallas on a pre-draft visit. Slated as a priority free agent, but in my mind is this year's Sean Lissemore, surprise 7th round pick. So get familiar with him. Will be 25 and is a one-year wonder, but that one year goes down as an all-timer for an FCS defensive player: 81 tackles, 24.5 tackles for loss, 22 sacks. Has the ability to back some of that up at the pro level.
I think we could go Albion CB Chris Greenwood here too.
