I'm talking about guys who may not be taken in the first two rounds but probably will be off the board by the end of round five. We excuse the hyped prospects and the late round flyers.

Here are 7 players I'm hoping the Cowboys will be looking closely at by that point in the draft. Feel free to add yours.

-

Johnny Patrick CB Louisville - Pure cover guy with NFL recovery speed, being knocked down a peg by a lack of size (5'10" 185) and some off field concerns (an assault charge that was dropped). Willing tackler despite size. Plenty of experience, started three years at Louisville. Picked off 9 passes, with that number increasing every year. Assault looks bad, but when you find out it was a wrestling match with a girlfriend over the telephone and quickly dropped, it puts things in perspective. If he interviews well, I'd have Patrick on my short list in the 3rd round if he's there. Similar to Patrick Surtain coming out.

James Brewer T Indiana - Athletic nimble big man (6'6" 325) who hasn't played a lot of football (only one year in high school). He improved steadily his senior year and earned universal praise at the Senior Bowl practices. The arrow is pointing up. The label on this kid is he's smart and coachable. Could possibly play either T spot in the NFL, giving the Cowboys flexibility in molding their future offensive line.

Kenrick Ellis DT Hampton and Jerrell Powe DT Mississippi - Similar big plugging NT prospects. Ellis has the off the field concerns and level of competition question. Powe had a big junior year and took a step back as a senior leaving some to question his passion. I'd love to see Rob Ryan have a chance to work with either. Preferably in a rotation with Josh Brent.

Eric Hagg S Nebraska - One of the few safeties in this class with a little range. Played a hybrid LB/S role in college so he's a little under developed in coverage but showed the ability to play centerfield with ease when asked to. Good size (6'1" 205) and a sound tackler. Might be a guy worth investing in if he's there in the 4th/5th round.

Akeem Dent ILB Georgia - IMO, the best big banger run stuffing ILB in this draft. What he lacks in coverage can be masked playing in a 3-4. The Cowboys need a stout ILB. Especially if they want to continue with Ratliff at NT. We're too weak in the middle. From Ratliff, to James and Brooking/Lee, to the safeties. A guy like Dent can begin to change that.

Austin Pettis WR Boise St. - He's got all the traits you look for except speed. But he plays faster than he times. Exceptional hands. Hard working. Selfless. This kid scored 39 touchdowns over his collegiate career. More than A.J. Green and Julio Jones combined. The kind of player that makes you go back to the draft books in two years to figure out why he wasn't more highly regarded. Would love to see our offensive coaching staff, namely Garrett and Robinson, have the chance to mold him into an NFL receiver.

I should add if Will Rackley G Lehigh makes it to the 3rd round, he would trump any of these players for me. But I think he'll end up being a late 2nd.

I like Kenrick Ellis and Pettis, would like Greg Little, but I do not think he will be there as a mid-rounder.

Mason Foster is someone I'd really hate if the Cowboys drafted. Not a super athlete but one of the best tacklers in the draft and just knows how to play the game. Has a knack for causing fumbles and generally seems to come up with big plays. I really like Mario Harvey from Marshall and he'd be a better fit in Rob Ryan's version of the 3-4 because you can put him pretty much anywhere. Played ILB, OLB and some D-end at Marshall and has like 8 sacks last year I think. Will fall because he's only 5'11 but he could be a really good swing linebacker and maybe even a starter down the road. Please stay away from both those players!

Don't worry, I'm sure Jerry will mess it up and draft the wrong player.
