Michael Lombardi of the NFL Network and the National Football Post, discussed the Cowboys and the NFC East rival Giants in an interview on KTCK-AM 1310 The Ticket this week. Some excerpts:
On what impressed him most from Cowboys game vs. Houston:
I thought Tony Romo was spectacular. I think Dez Bryant should get 10 balls a game, I think he should be thrown to twice a quarter down the field because he's sensational. He's similar to Andre Johnson. He's a young player, but he's so explosive and so talented, he is the key to the Cowboys. And this is not to take anything away from Miles Austin, because I think Miles Austin and Dez Bryant are probably two of the most powerful receivers in the NFL. It was nice to see Roy Williams make some plays but the key to me is in this offense Dez Bryant has to become not just a piece but a major focal point.
On Cowboys offense stalling in the past because they tried to give the ball to too many different people:
I think that's why you have the first three weeks of the season because now you know. I think you know you need more Dez Bryant, you know you still have to get the ball to Miles Austin, you know Tony Romo can make all the throws. You really unfortunately know that Marion Barber is not the back that he once was, and you're going to have to reduce his time. You're going to have to play more Felix Jones, or you're going to have to give Tashard Choice an opportunity. You're going to have to sit in that room this week and clean up that running back situation because they're playing three backs, but they really don't have three running backs... Marion Barber's not the same. He can't get to the corner and he doesn't run with the same power that he did. When he's on the field they're a slower offensive mechanism, they can be defended much easier. It's problematic for Jason Garrett to call plays with Marion Barber in the game... If it were me, if Felix Jones can handle the roll I'm going to give him the ball more because it makes them explosive especially when they spread you out, as they can do.
On the New York Giants being about implode:
The Giants to me are a team that went into the off-season and wrote down what their problems were and then I didn't think they addressed them. Their secondary doesn't really handle the speed of the game. They tried to play nickel against the Colts and Peyton Manning said 'are you really serious with this front here, I'm just going to run the ball down your throat.' It really was an embarrassing game for the Giants and if you're a giants fan it wasn't a fun game to watch. And then offensively, their offensive line isn't nearly as good and their defensive line can't dominate the game like they once could. I think Michael Strahan is probably the biggest loss of all because in that room, he was a dominant factor. He may not have been the best player on the defensive line but he was the leader of the team and I don't think they replaced him to focus some of these young players on what it takes to be a professional.
