I love ya Mel, but sometimes you talk out of both sides of your mouth.

In his report card he gave Dallas a B- and said....

-

Dallas got good value later, but never took a player that seemed like a steal at the position.

-

And in his post draft chat, he says this....

-

Mike (Rochester, MN) [via mobile]
Mel, what team do you think had the best day 3?

Mel Kiper (2:46 PM)

Wow. GREAT question. I like what Buffalo did. Baltimore. Cincinnati. Cleveland. Denver. KC. Dallas. Washington. Green Bay. Minnesota. Carolina. Arizona.

Maybe it's me, but that kind of doesn't make sense.

Maybe it's a case of needing some time to really have a better feel for things.

What's to be confused about? He says Dallas had one of the better day threes and backed it up by saying they got good value later in the draft. Good value late, solid day three but no big steals. What am I missing?

Nothing confusing about it. He said we got good value in the later rounds. That would indicate to anyone with a brain that we had a good day 3.. which is why he said as much in that chat question.

I don't know. He sounded critical of the class in his report card. Saying that Carter and Murray were weird selections considering their needs and while they got good value late, they didn't get a steal.

Why add that last part if you consider them to have one of the best 3rd days in the draft? Why not just say that. If I felt that way I'd say while Carter and Murray don't fit immediate needs, the Cowboys had a great 3rd day to strengthen their grade.

To me he's covering all his bases. So however those players pan out, you can point to where you said you expected it. If they bomb, you can say you said they didn't get a steal. If some of these guys pan out big, you can mention that chat where you listed them as one of the best 3rd days.

To be fair, he listed 12 teams as having the best 3rd day in the draft so its not like we were in some exclusive club. He has always been finicky, probably because he knows he will be wrong about something. It is hard to give your opinion knowing you will be wrong about something.

Mel used to be more definitive in his work. It's like he's been scarred by criticism and/or failed projections that his draft report these days usually gives you a reason why the guy can succeed and also why he may not.

It is hard work for anyone because the opinion can be measured at a later date, and often is. How often does anyone pay attention to guys like Bayless, Rome, or any other loudmouth asshole at ESPN and track how many times they are wrong? Unlike those guys, Mel seems to put in a lot of hard work, and it can be hard to have so many people tell you how wrong you have been after the effort he has put into his work.

Hopefully he can talk to a shrink and get over it. I don't always like his opinion but it seems to be better than a lot of the alternatives.

Mel used to be much more brutal in his assessments.

He's gotten more bland.

I agree. Well, with the first part. I wouldn't call him bland. His passion for the draft still shines through.

It may be just an age thing. He's getting more mellow as he gets older.

I'll take the guy who has lived for the draft over the guy who decided he was a draft analyst when NFLN was looking to create their own Kiper.

Take who you want. Mayock is right more often, his analysis is more consistent and accurate, and he's much less annoying too lol.

He isn't right more often. His analysis isn't more consistent and his gay lisp is hella annoying.

Oh..wait....almost forgot - lol

To each his own.. Kiper wishes he was the draft guru that Mayock is though. Mayock got the first 9 picks of the draft correct this year. How many did Kiper get?

The two were nearly even throughout the first round with Kiper getting closer on more picks. Both made 9 correct first round guesses but Kiper guessed closer more often than Mayock. Kiper had 4 picks that were not in the first round while Mayock had 5.

Seems like Kiper only guessed closer than Mayock by 1 or 2, depending on how far out you go on that chart. Shows why they are the draft guru's for the two networks that air the draft. But i'll take Mayock all day. Far less annoying and more accurate and reasonable analysis, imo.

How can you say more accurate when you just said Kiper guessed closer than Mayock?

Probably Kiper's less aggressive with his comments because he has nothing to prove anymore...he's a draft legend. Back in the 80s and early 90s he was still trying to make a name for himself.

Im talking about their analysis..meaning their overview of each player. Mayock tells it like it is, while Kiper gives you more of a "well he may be this, or he may be this" type of description. He contradicts himself too much when talking about the picks.
