A couple of days ago, we addressed the possibility of the Cowboys replacing quarterback Tony Romo. Not so much this year, but finding his replacement in the next two or three years.

Well, NFL draft expert Mel Kiper looks at a few quarterbacks who might be worth getting rid of in a few years. It's part of the ESPN Insider service, but you should get it, it's worth it. Kiper ranks the urgency level for replacing Romo at 6. Lower than Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Drew Brees.

Here's a little of what Kiper said about Romo:

  • Romo will be 31 on April 21, so I don't see this as much of a need, but you get a sense that Dallas has some durability concerns, not merely because Romo is coming off an injury, but because of the way he extends plays and is willing to hang onto the ball so long before he gets rid of it.

Of course Romo, is one of the best quarterbacks in the league,. But he's missed 13 games due to injury since 2006, including 10 last year due to the broken collarbone. However, both plays on which he was injured were when he was standing in the pocket, not running around the pocket.

As Romo gets older, the urgency in the quest to win a title becomes greater, and whether he can withstand the pressure is uncertain.

That's why I think we draft his replacement next year or the year after.

Let's concentrate on the DL, OL, and the safety positions this year.

Maybe a third down back and a corner for depth seeing we don't know what's going on with Barber until free agency starts.

I do like a few QBs in this draft, but I'm not crazy about them.

I like Ricky Stanzi and Pat Devlin in the mid rounds. Stanzi maybe early 4th. Devlin a round later.

So we're gonna draft a Qb and groom him for 7 years?

I wouldn't mind taking this guy in the 2nd or 3rd round in 2013. He could sit a year or two and be ready to go when Romo is around 35/36.

Brock Osweiler 6'8" 235. Pretty mobile for a 6'8" guy and has a strong arm.

I realize targeting a specific player 3 drafts from now is insane but that might be the draft (2013) we look for a replacement. I'm not sure Steven McGee is the guy and if he is, he may be ready before Romo is ready to call it quits.

I dunno, Stanzi is too inconsistent on the football field. He worries me.

Devlin, wasn't he late for his own workouts? Redflags everywhere with this kid.

If we were to go QB I like Locker, Ryan Mallet, Andy Dalton or if he were to fall Blaine Gabbert, but I doubt it.

McElroy to replace McGee in the later rounds would be another choice.
