McCann named special teams player of week

Bryan McCann was selected NFC special teams player of the week for his 97-yard punt return for a touchdown against Detroit. Last week McCann earned NFC defensive player of the week after his 101-yard interception return for a touchdown against the New York Giants.

McCann is the first in club history to be named NFC player of the week in consecutive regular-season games. Troy Aikman won NFC offensive player of the week in consecutive playoff games in 1993.

McCann also is the first Cowboy to win NFC player of the week honors in two different categories in the same season and the first in the NFL since DeSean Jackson of the Eagles (Week 1, 2009 and Week 14, 2009-Special Teams and Week 7, 2009-Offense).

Two other Cowboys have won player of the week honors in two different categories _ Bill Bates (Week 2, 1987-Defense; Week 7, 1994-Special Teams) and Herschel Walker (Week 16, 1987-Offense; Week 8, 1996-Special Teams).

NFC Special teams player of the week

In the win against Detroit (11/21), Bryan McCann had a 97-yard punt return for a touchdown which is the second-longest punt return by any player in club history. It is also the second-longest by a rookie as Dennis Morgan (98 yards at St. Louis, 10/13/74) had the longest. Along with his 101-yard interception return last week at the N.Y. Giants, McCann is the second player this season with two 90-plus yard returns for touchdowns in two-or-less consecutive games - Leon Washington had a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and a 101-yard kickoff return for a touchdown at Miami (9/26). McCann is the first rookie to accomplish the feat since Devin Hester had a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, followed by a 96-yarder for a score on Dec. 11, 2006.
This is his first NFC Special Teams Player of the Week award and second weekly award overall. He was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week last week for his performance at the N.Y. Giants. This is the third player of the week award for the team this year - DeMarcus Ware, Week Three, NFC Defensive Player of the Week.
