It's off to option No.3 for the Dallas Cowboys as they attempt to fil the newly created position of assistant offensive-line coach.
Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews today dropped out of the search, re-signing with Houston as an offensive assistant. On Sunday, former Cowboys tight end Dan Campbell went to Miami as tight-ends coach. Campbell had interviewed twice for the job with the Cowboys.
The Cowboys have at least four openings: assistant offensive line; wide receivers; defensive line and linebackers.
It appears that at least eight coaches from last year's staff will return to work with head coach Jason Garrett. Chris Boniol (kickers), Joe DeCamillis (special teams), John Garrett (tight ends), Hudson Houck (offensive line), Skip Peete (running backs) and Dave Campo (secondary) were part of the club's contingent at the opening day of Senior Bowl workouts. Brett Maxie (safeties) and Wes Phillips (offensive assistant) are expected to join the group on Tuesday. Owner-general manager Jerry Jones said it is safe to expect any coach with the club at this point will return.
Maxie and Phillips honored a previous committment and worked with former Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips at the East-West Shrine game in Orlando, Fla., on Saturday. Wes Phillips served as offensive coordinator for his father.
