Maybe we should start arming our children rather than cracking down on guns.

(Reuters) - At least 27 people, including 18 children, were killed on Friday when at least one shooter opened fire at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, CBS News reported, citing unnamed officials.

If confirmed, it would be one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history. The holiday season tragedy follows a series of shooting rampages in the United States this year that have killed multiple victims, and it was certain to revive a debate about U.S. gun laws.

The principal and school psychologist were among the dead, CNN said. Witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots with some saying as many as 100 were fired.

The suspected shooter, 24, was armed with four weapons and wearing a bullet-proof vest, WABC reported.

There were unconfirmed reports of a second shooter.

Another person was being held in police custody after he was detained in the woods near the school wearing camouflage pants, CBS reported.

Sandy Hook Elementary School teaches children from kindergarten through fourth grade - roughly ages 5 to 10.

"It was horrendous," said parent Brenda Lebinski, who rushed to the school where her daughter is in the third grade. "Everyone was in hysterics - parents, students. There were kids coming out of the school bloodied. I don't know if they were shot, but they were bloodied."

Television images showed police and ambulances at the scene, and parents rushing toward the school. Parents were seen reuniting with their children and taking them home.

"This is going to be bad," a state official told Reuters, requesting anonymity because the scope of the tragedy remained uncertain.

President Barack Obama was notified and would receive regular updates throughout the day, White House spokesman Jay Carney said.

"We're still waiting for more information about the incident in Connecticut," Carney said when asked about the president's reaction to it.

Carney called the event "tragic" and said there would be time later for a discussion of policy implications.

Obama remains committed to trying to renew a ban on assault weapons, Carney said.

All Newtown schools were placed in lockdown after the shooting, the Newtown Public School District said.

Lebinski said a mother who was at the school during the shooting told her a "masked man" entered the principal's office and may have shot the principal. Lebinski, who is friends with the mother who was at the school, said the principal was "severely injured."

Lebinski's daughter's teacher "immediately locked the door to the classroom and put all the kids in the corner of the room."

Danbury Hospital, about 11 miles west of the school, had received three patients from the scene, a hospital spokeswoman told NBC Connecticut. The mayor of Danbury, Mark Boughton, told MSNBC: "They are very serious injuries."

A girl interviewed by NBC Connecticut described hearing seven loud "booms" as she was in gym class. Other children began crying and teachers moved the students to a nearby office, she said.

"A police officer came in and told us to run outside and so we did," the unidentified girl said on camera.

One child was carried from Sandy Hook Elementary School by a police officer, and the child appeared to have been wounded, the town's weekly newspaper, the Newtown Bee, said on its website.

Connecticut State Police said its officers were at the scene with local police but provided no additional details. The emergency call to police occurred at 9:41 a.m., state police said.

Newtown, with a population about 27,000, is in northern Fairfield County, about 45 miles southwest of Hartford and 80 miles northeast of New York City.

Sandy Hook is one of four elementary schools in the district.

The United States has experienced a number of mass shooting rampages this year, most recently in Oregon, where a gunman opened fire at a shopping mall on Tuesday, killing two people and then himself.

The deadliest attack came in July at a midnight screening of a Batman film in Colorado that killed 12 people and wounded 58.

What a coward though. Arms himself with a bulletproof vest to go to war with unarmed, unknowing, innocent children?

This is really sad because those kids who were gunned down probably all they thought about was what they were going to get for Christmas, and then this happens. What an asshole.

How do you propose they do that? Minority Report? Have Tom Cruise sit in an office all day and analyze pre-meditated, virgin murder?

I'm talking about after the fact. We don't even know where the killer got his guns or whether it was legal for him to own them. Nor can you disarm millions of law abiding gun owners to stop a crazy few.

As a responsible gun owner, I find it absurd that anyone in this country has access to assault rifles. It's hot when cheerleaders hold them. Not so hot when crazy people are shooting up schools and movie theaters.

Unfortunately, just like it took a gay daughter to make Cheney a supporter--and Hurricane Sandy to make republicans in Jersey beg for federal money-- it's probably going to take the senseless death of some conservative's child before any type of legislation will be passed.

I'm all for guns but damn we have to make it harder for nut jobs to get them. I know this is a HUGE political issue but not doing anything is a worse answer than those proposing tougher gun control. The answer is somewhere in between and people need to stop being stubborn and figure it out.

I love when people butcher that quote.

But seriously, guns available to own should be limited to only revolvers with 6 in the chamber and a shotgun. These high-powered rifles and semi-automatics need to go.

So instead of 20 people being shot, you're limiting it to 10-12 before they rush him.

Isn't that the quote?

I've head people say "evil triumphs when good men do nothing" a lot but I thought I had it correctly ? Seriously asking.

If true, that's actually a huge point against those who just want stricter screening criteria.

Assault rifles should be banned. Period.

And I'd love to see bullets taxed like a motherfucker.

Just curious, but what would this accomplish? If some crazy bastard is planning on shooting up a theater, school, or whatever, do you think expensive bullets will dissuade him? I seriously doubt it. Especially if they're planning on killing themselves afterwards, anyway.

All that would do is make hunting/target shooting more expensive for everyone else.

What??? You're hysterical. And I don't mean funny. So the mother purchased them legally, and DID NOT SECURE THEM obviously or gave her unstable kid access which is unbelievably irresponsible and you think that invalidates the legal purchase process? You win the award for most retarded thing I've read today. You're basically saying this idiot mother bought guns and did nothing to keep them from her psycho kid so let's BAN guns so that doesn't happen again. Yeah, not gonna happen.

P.S. The kid never used the eeeeeeeeevil assault rifle.

lol "most retarded thing" is like the pot calling the kettle black.

Lots of emotion in your post, so I doubt you're even capable of having rational thoughts on this subject. Regardless, I'll post for the board in general.

There were actually two violent attacks in schools yesterday. One in Connecticut, and the other in China. Both involved over 20 children. The attack in China had no reported fatalities. The attack in America took 27 lives. Why such a difference in fatality count? Well, the attacker in China had a knife, while the one in CT had two semi-automatic weapons, and 3rd one ready to go just in case. The same type of weapons were used in Aurora, at the Wisconsin temple, in Tuscon and at Va. Tech.

There are about 25K gun deaths per year in America, which is 20 times the world average for developed nations. England and Japan in comparison, have less than 50 murders/year. Japan actually averages less than 10, and it was down to 2 total soon after outlawing all forms of firearm ownership. Germany averages less than 200. All of these nations obviously have stricter gun laws than the US.

The 2nd amendment interpretation that the NRA spends millions to promote is a complete fallacy. None of these registered gun owners is part of any militia. The entire purpose of that amendment was to be able to call upon citizens in the event that the British returned to fight. It's no surprise that red state gun supporters are living 200 years in the past though. This is the same group who just now decided that women and minorities are somewhat equal to white males since they just got their asses beat in the presidential election. Plus, even Reagan backed stricter gun laws, so it's hysterical that it has now become such a partisan issue.

I wish senseless murders of innocent children did not exist. We can't stop that. What we know is that you don't need high-speed, rapid-fire weapons to hunt or defend your home. I've shot numerous types of guns and my family has also owned many, but it's embarrassing to see how irrational some can be with regards to this subject. Like I said, until it actually involves your own children getting pumped full of lead in one of these massacres, you won't have a reason to want to understand or care.
