Former NFL head coach Steve Mariucci today endorsed the work of Dallas Cowboys' quarterback Tony Romo.

Mariucci said Romo's regular-season record as a starter (53-36) should be considered when viewing his work.

"A lot of teams would love to have that,'' said Mariucci, who was 72-67 in nine seasons with San Francisco and Detroit. "As you know, the coach and the quarterback get a lot of credit, maybe more than they need, and a lot of grief, maybe more than they need. Tony Romo can handle that.''

Mariucci, now with the NFL Network, said Romo's style is similar to that of the Super Bowl quarterbacks: Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger and Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers. LIke them, Romo has the ability to improvise and extend plays.

"He has that kind of skill set,'' Mariucci said. "If they get back on track with Jason (Garrett) and start fast next year, he will be right in that mix.''

Mariucci acknowledged that for Romo to join the upper crust of quarterbacks, he must have post-season success. The Cowboys are 1-3 in Romo's post-season starts.

"To become an elite quarterback, you have to win in the playoffs,'' Mariucci said. "That's the next hurdle that Tony Romo and his supporting cast will be challenged with.

"I like their team. They've got a lot of talent. They'll be right there.''
