Marion Barber retires at age 28

Veteran running back Marion Barber has retired, the Chicago Bears announced Friday.

The 28-year-old spent six seasons with the Dallas Cowboys before signing with the Bears last season.

"I want to thank everyone who gave me the opportunity to play, and I'm very thankful to have had the chance to suit up for two of the NFL's most storied organizations," Barber told the Bears website."I want to thank everyone who helped me become a better player. I owe a lot to a lot of coaches, and am also very grateful to the owners and organizations I played for. Last but not least, I want to thank the fans for the support and inspiration they gave me."

He backed up Matt Forte last season, but the Bears moved in another direction Thursday by signing Michael Bush. That deal made it likely that the Bears would release Barber.

Barber's best season was in 2006 when he led the NFL in rushing touchdowns with 14. He made the Pro Bowl the following season with 975 yards and 10 TDs.

Last year Barber gained 422 yards on 114 carries, and he also scored six touchdowns.

His only game over 100 yards for the Bears was on Dec. 11 against the Broncos, and that was also his most infamous game as he ran out of bounds instead of letting the clock run late with the Bears leading. He then fumbled in OT to set up Denver's game-winning field goal.

Once they made the rule saying you can't use your hand like the way he did, it was all down hill. NFL loves making rules against our players.

Entire Roy Williams quote on Barber: “Well, when you can’t make the back flip all the way [around], it’s time."

That, and defenders knowing the sure-fire way to bring him down is to avoid his entire upper body and just go for his legs.

Marion kicking it outside on questionable wheels only aided them.

16 mil guaranteed and a 12 mil signing bonus just a few short years ago probably helped him ease in to the retirement state of mind.
