Manning Would Be A Nice Fit
by nickeatman
No, not talking about Peyton, or even Eli. So save the quarterback talk for another day.
Let’s keep with the theme of the need at safety. And for some reason, I keep thinking about Chicago’s Danieal Manning, who is expected to become a restricted free agent when that signing period begins.
And when that happens, the Cowboy will also likely be in need of not one, but two safeties. Gerald Sensabaugh will also become unrestricted as well.
But even if he re-signs, there is a chance the Cowboys could move him to free safety. When he played in 2009, he was rather interchangeable with Ken Hamlin, who has also played both spots.
So I think when the Cowboys are in search of a safety, it doesn’t have to be just a free safety. In fact, they could be looking for both.
But Manning is intriguing because he’s got great size at 5-11, 202 and plays with a ferocious style on defense. He’s a big-time hitter that can do some damage close to the line of scrimmage. But before you start screaming that he’d be another Roy Williams, let’s not forget his return skills.
Special teams coach Joe DeCamillis called Manning a “violent returner” early last season because he returns kickoffs with an attitude. Yeah, the Bears have Devin Hester, but they still made sure Manning got his share of runbacks as well. He’s got a career average of 26.8 yards in five years and in limited defensive time, he’s got seven interceptions – at least one in every season.
Like any free agent, you have to be cautious to overspend, considering his team would’ve decided to cut ties. Manning obviously thinks he’s got some value in the open-market for he already rejected an offer from the Bears, who gave him an original-tender for restricted free agency.
So to get this guy, it’ll cost any team a second-round pick, of course that’s always negotiable.
While the Cowboys seem to have a nice second-round pick at No. 40 overall, getting a guy that could fill both safety and kick return needs in one swoop might be worth it as well.
Just a guy to keep an eye on.
