Cowboys Mailbag
KEVIN JOHNSON - DALLAS, TX: I don't understand why the owners are pushing for an 18-game season. Any insight?
Nick: Money – always. People don't care or really watch preseason games. No one really likes them. So if you're going to play 20 games, the owners are figuring why not make 18 of them count where they can get some real money, instead of 16. It's pretty simple to see the owners side.
Rob: Jerry Jones mentioned that 18 games would "grow the pie." Basically, there's likely to be more fan interest -- and thereby more revenue for both sides -- with two more regular-season games than two preseason games.
Josh: Straight cash, homey. After the economic slowdown, the owners feel it incumbent to attempt to make more money to finance what is some pretty significant overhead, you'll have to admit. More regular season games will do that, and maybe one day so will an expanded playoff field. Now, the players have a legitimate case about their health concerns, but this is a power plant, after all. The owners believe more games will mean more money for the players, too.
JOSH RESIGNER - FORT WAYNE, IN: Shouldn't the Cowboys try to trade down in the draft this year, stockpile picks and fill holes with quality players instead of going for the big splash at No. 9?
Nick: Sounds good, except for the fact that the Cowboys haven't been that great at drafting. So the further down you go, the more risk you have. Look at 2009, they stockpiled to get 12 picks. You can argue that none of them will be anything more than role players. Personally, I think you should splash at No. 9. Give me a guy that you know can play for you right now. So they get another second-round pick. What does another Martellus Bennett do for this team? I think I'm staying put this year.
Rob: They need a big splash. They can't fill multiple holes at No. 9 alone -- and they have multiple holes -- but the odds are they'll get a better player at No. 9 than trading down. A top-10 pick should be an impact player, someone who can play right away and be part of the team's foundation. They need another guy like that, particularly on defense.
Josh: I know I wrote that they need an instant impact player at No. 9 this year, and I do believe that. But say they think they can still get that guy at No. 17, where the Patriots pick, and can also add pick No. 33 overall from New England. Why, you might get a good player there too. It'll just depend on the Cowboys' board, and where they think the value is. But absolutely, they need to get an immediate starter with their top pick, whenever that comes.
