Cowboys Mailbag
JOE PUTNAM - RICHFIELD SPRINGS, NY: I'm wondering what the DeMarco Murray pick means for Tashard Choice, and why it was necessary. Choice would be a starter for three out of five NFL teams. You can't tell me he doesn't impress with his limited touches.
Nick: I don't believe that comment about Choice. If you think he could start for 60 percent of the league, then why didn't one team offer anything decent to the Cowboys when they shopped him around last year? I think he's a solid back but he's not special. Apparently the Cowboys are looking for special.
Rob: That's a good question. It tells me the Cowboys aren't exactly high on Barber or Choice, to be quite honest. Remember, Jason Garrett continued to play Barber over Choice last year. Now, Jerry Jones said their third back needs to play special teams, something Choice hasn't done consistently. So it's conceivable Choice moves into second on the depth chart behind Felix Jones, and Murray takes the No. 3 spot. But they didn't draft Murray to mostly sit on the bench when the offense has the ball.
JOHN YOUNG - COMMACK, NY: Why is it the Cowboys had no interest in drafting a quarterback if the Patriots are willing to take a guy like Ryan Mallett just a pick ahead of us in the third round? We could have taken the best passer in the draft and lit a fire under Tony Romo.
Nick: It's hard to second-guess anything the Patriots do. But don't forget that New England has far less needs than the Cowboys. They have the luxury of taking a strong-armed thrower and giving him time to sit and learn behind the best. The Cowboys need their third-round pick to play right away.
Rob: That crossed my mind, too. But the Cowboys aren't the Patriots. They weren't 14-2. They have many more holes in their roster, and although I was surprised they took a running back so high (third round), it's certainly a bigger need than quarterback. And given Mallett's character concerns, there's a reason he dropped all the way to the third. Not sure the Cowboys would have gambled there anyway.
