Cowboys Mailbag
JOSEPH DOUCETTE - SEOUL, ON: Should we be worried Dez Bryant's off-the-field behavior will be his undoing? This mall incident in isolation seems harmless enough, but reports cite a series of other problems Bryant has had at the mall. Given that he has only been in Dallas for about a year, it seems like an awful lot of poor decisions. It also suggests he thinks he can do whatever he wants, or that the rules do not apply to him.
Nick: Yes, I think fans should be concerned and I would imagine the Cowboys, as an organization don't like to see headlines like this. But this is what they signed up for. To get the electrifying player who has as much talent as anyone, you have to put up with these kind of things. I'm sure people will say "it's no big deal" and it probably isn't. But it'll always be something, and that's just something this team is going to have to accept.
Josh: Absolutely. It's the biggest worry with Dez. As the Cowboys' own scouting report of him last year said, he's not a bad kid, just immature, even for a 22-year old. Don't these reports sound just like something an angsty teen would do in a mall? I know this, the Cowboys described him internally as either a star or a bust - not because he couldn't play, but because there was no way to know how he would handle the fame, money and responsibility. I tend to give him the benefit of the doubt because knowing where he came from, he's actually fairly well adjusted. He still has a way to go obviously, so either he learns from this and grows up quickly, or Cowboys fans and the team will have to get used to this stuff.
JOE SANCHEZ - IRVING, TX: With the lockout, can you guys fill us in on the daily routine for the coaching staff right now? Is it all draft business?
Nick: I wouldn't say all draft business because this is a new defensive staff that is still trying to get organized on schemes and personnel. If something happens with the CBA and the lockout ends, the staff has to be ready to prepare a rookie mini-camp after the draft and possibly some OTAs and mini-camps for the rest of the team. It's not all about the draft, but they are here and working.
Josh: Not entirely draft, though the coaches are all doing the same homework for April that they typically would. Every offseason a head coach hands out different research projects to the staff, and I would imagine they've got even more of that kind of work under Jason Garrett this offseason, since everyone knew ahead of time there could be a lockout.
