Cowboys Mailbag
Is it really a good idea for the Cowboys to send Marion Barber packing now when I believe he still has a lot to give?
ANDRES ESCAJEDA - OKLAHOMA CITY, OK: It sounds as if Marion Barber is on the way out. I believe he still has a lot to give. Is it really a good idea for the Cowboys to send him packing now?
Nick: Well, if Barber has so much to give . . . why hasn't he been giving it? What's the holdup? Now, I do think he's better than people give him credit for and I still think he's a better all-around back than Choice. But whether he's a good back or an average back, he's got a horrible contract for his production. I think whether there is a cap or not a cap, Barber is probably on his way out.
Josh: He probably doesn't have as much to give as he has to take, speaking specifically of that seven-year, $45 million contract that his production level never measured up with to start. By releasing him the Cowboys would save money and not lose much, if anything, compared to a replacement. I understand the line wasn't great last year, but his plodding style certainly didn't help matters. I think Barber's fate really was sealed when he defied Jason Garrett's dress code in the interim head coach's first week after replacing Wade Phillips, a team captain openly disrespecting his new boss.
KYLE NANCE - WASHINGTON, DC: What are Montrae Holland's chances of earning a real shot at starting shot this year, with Kyle Kosier a free agent and Leonard Davis' future somewhat in doubt?
Nick: That's a good question. Holland really hasn't had a real shot to start but he might get one now. There was a reason the Cowboys gave him a two-year deal last summer. They knew it might come into play this season. I could see Kosier not getting re-signed and the Cowboys hopeful that David Arkin can come on strong. If not, then Holland is there to start for however long is needed.
Josh: Well, we'll just see what happens with Kosier and Davis. I think they could let go of either/or and feel that Holland gives them a decent replacement, but since he was acquired the team hasn't given us much reason to believe they really want him in a starting job. Personally, I would be a little surprised if Kosier and Davis weren't both back.
