Cowboys Mailbag
How do Robert Brewster, Phil Costa and Sam Young fit into the future plans? Do they affect this year's draft?
JOEL BROWN - MCLEAN, VA: How do Robert Brewester, Phil Costa and Sam Young fit into the future plans? Do they affect this year's draft? lol
Rob: They really shouldn't. Nothing against the potential of any of those guys, but we're talking about a former third-rounder who's been a practice squad guy, an undrafted rookie and a sixth-round pick. Maybe Costa or Young can develop into starters, but the Cowboys shouldn't dismiss taking a lineman high in the draft because of them. It's past time to restock the depth there.
Nick: I wouldn't think they would affect anything, unless you haven't done anything on the offensive line until about the fifth round. Then I might ask myself if this tackle is better than Sam Young? But they shouldn't wait that long. If you're waiting on those guys to play, then they should've played last year when every guy from the practice squad was getting called up.
Josh: None of those guys stops the Cowboys from doing anything going forward. They haven't done enough to make the Cowboys assume they'll be good players for them in the future. A couple of them I wouldn't even count on as quality backups. Usually offensive linemen don't slip through the cracks.
BRANDON MOHON - FARMINGTON, NM: If A.J. Green of Georgia is the best player on their board and still available at No. 9, do you think the Cowboys would draft another receiver?
Rob: Who else is there? A stud offensive or defensive lineman? Safety? Cornerback? All those positions are greater needs right now. To me, Green would have to be head and shoulders higher on the draft board than anyone else available. Teams can say they take best available, but need is always a factor to some extent.
Nick: Hmm, that's a tough one. Of course, that might depend on what happens with Roy Williams. If he is released, then another receiver would be needed. I know you have other needs. But I really think he's going to be one of the best receivers in the NFL. That being said, I bet other teams think that, too. And that's why I think he'll be gone by the time the Cowboys pick.
Josh: Picking him would be a complete waste. I know the Cowboys believe in picking the best available players, but that's overload, even if Roy Williams is gone. There won't be enough balls to go around for everyone, and the Cowboys have so many other holes to fill that the Matt Millen route makes no sense. The Cowboys don't need much help at the offensive skill positions. If he's the best guy there and there are no comparable defensive players or offensive linemen, they should trade down.
