Cowboys Mailbag
FERN DELISLE - FREDERICKSBURG, VA: I know Senior Bowl practice has just begun, but has anyone jumped out that looks like they will be successful at the next level and could help this team from day one?
Nick: The guys that are going to jump out really aren't here at the Senior Bowl. There are some guys who will be first-rounders, but right now, it's way too early to say this guy could help. But there are some players who look impresive. I like Colorado's offensive tackle Nate Solder. He looks like a big tight end because of his feet. He's really similiar to Doug Free. Not sure, he's a No. 9 pick though. That's the point, there probably isn't a guy here that will help this team at No. 9. But there are tons of guys who could help in the second and third rounds.
Rob: Purely without Aggie bias, Von Miller looks like a stud. Sideline to sideline player, although I wonder about his size in a 3-4 scheme. Probably an inside guy. Cal defensive end Cameron Jordan was unblockable at times during the North practice; he's the type of pass-rushing end the Cowboys need. There are a few impressive offensive tackles here, but Colorado's Nate Solder is a legit 6-8, 315 pounds and can move.
Josh: I should really just punt on this one, because I'm not in Mobile with Nick and Rob. But some of the prospects I would expect the Cowboys to have their eye on closely would be Oklahoma safety Quintin Carter, Oregon linebacker Casey Matthews, Auburn linebacker Josh Bynes, Florida cornerback Ahmad Black and Mississippi State tackle Derek Sherrod. I don't know that any of them are real options at No. 9, but playing in big programs like they did, especially in the SEC, suggests to me they're more NFL-ready than the small-school prospects.
JOHN BUDNIK - ANCHORAGE, AK: What do you guys think of Igor Olshansky? He seemed relatively quiet this past year. Is he here in 2011?
Nick: I think he's back. And yes, he was quiet - just like most defenisve ends in this scheme. When you play mostly on first and second downs at defensive end, you're not going to have a lot of big plays. That's the way it's always been. Marcus Spears was quiet. Chris Canty really was, too. I thought he was solid - which isn't always good enough. But being just two years into his deal, I would imagine he returns.
Rob: If Jay Ratliff stays at nose tackle in Rob Ryan's scheme, the defensive ends must take some pressure off him with some pass rush. That includes Olshansky, even though he's only a two-down player. Right now there aren't any indications that Olshansky won't be here, but Ryan will obviously have input on which guys fit his scheme.
Josh: What do you mean he was quiet? Didn't you see all those ridiculous celebrations? He's under contract, and at least serviceable for the position. Considering the fact Marcus Spears, Stephen Bowen and Jason Hatcher are all free agents, I don't think the Cowboys can afford to let him go.
