Today we open up the off-season mailbag with some thoughts on cap casualties and Nnamdi Asomugha:
Q: How do the Boys sit with the salary cap right now? Obviously a lot is up in the air, but assuming the labor deal gets worked out, how much will we have to work with under next year’s cap? – Brad, Raleigh, N.C.
A: It’s hard to say because we don’t know whether there will be a cap in 2011 and how much it will be. They will have the chance to create space by cutting guys like Marion Barber, Leonard Davis, Keith Brooking and Terence Newman (as well as some others). They can create room by re-working the contracts of DeMarcus Ware, Tony Romo and Miles Austin. Stephen Jones has structured contracts in a way where the Cowboys will be able to maneuver enough to get players they want/need.
Q: What do you think of moving Newman to safety? With his speed and experience, would that be a good fit? – Richard Craft, Richardson, Texas
A: I wouldn’t do it. Newman gets banged up at cornerback and safety is a more physical position. I don’t think he would hold up for a season.
Q: Why isn't Dave Wannstedt considered a candidate for DC job? Is it because he doesn't know the 3-4? It seemed that he could get players to play hard for him when he worked with Jimmy Johnson before – Kris, New York
A. Since Rob Ryan is about to be named the coordinator, I’ll answer this question: Why wasn’t Dave Wannstedt considered? I’ll start with this: He has not coached a 3-4 defense and the Cowboys are sticking with the 3-4. And he has not been a coordinator since 1992. That’s 18 long years. It’s not like he would forget how to do it, but a lot has changed in the NFL since 1992. And I’m not sure Wannstedt wants that kind of role. I think he’s looking more for an assistant head coach role.
Q: Does Oakland have the ability to put the franchise tag on Asomugha? Doesn't that complicate our signing him? – Matthew, Fort Worth, Texas
A: Oakland does not have the ability to put the tag on Asomugha. That was part of his deal that he voided, so he will be free to sign elsewhere.
Q: Does signing Rob Ryan give the Cowboys any more of an inside position to sign CB Nnamdi Asomugha? – Craig Sullivan, New York
A: I wouldn’t say it would give them more of an inside position, but it wouldn’t hurt. The biggest factor will be money, as always. But last week Asomugha said he hoped he would return to the Raiders.
Q: Regarding Jason Garrett calling plays being a problem, I guess you forgot or are not old enough to know that Tom Landry called all the offensive and defensive plays and that worked out pretty well! – Doug Mackenzie, Cleveland
A. No, Doug, I remember that. And I never said Garrett calling the plays would be a problem. I’m actually OK with it. I thought he did a good job calling the plays down the stretch because he kept his defense in mind more, it seemed.
