'Truth hurts' about Orlando Scandrick
July, 30, 2010

By Tim MacMahon

SAN ANTONIO – Call it the Curse of No. 32.

Cornerback Orlando Scandrick seems to have a knack for colliding with high-profile Cowboys receivers.

Dez Bryant is the most recent receiver for Scandrick to send to the trainer’s room. The first-rounder suffered a right high ankle sprain when Scandrick landed on him after breaking up a Jon Kitna pass thrown behind Bryant.

Roy Williams missed a practice during last year’s training camp after getting tangled up with Scandrick on a deep ball. Williams hurt his wrist while breaking up his fall.

It was also Scandrick who collided with Williams during the open practice at Cowboys Stadium. Williams was relieved when X-rays showed that he suffered only a bruised shoulder, not a broken collarbone.

“If there is any injury to the receiver, Scandrick is the culprit,” Patrick Crayton said, half-kidding. “He is always around. He is never around the ball. He is always around the injury.

“I wish it would happen to another team.”

Wade Phillips defended Scandrick, saying he made the kind of play on the pass to Bryant that the Cowboys expect out of their defensive backs.

Scandrick, who tried to avoid falling on Bryant, certainly doesn’t find any humor in the subject. Crayton said Scandrick usually responds by cussing at them when the receivers give him a hard time about it.

“Sometimes the truth hurts,” Crayton said.

Hurt tends to happen when Scandrick is around.
