MacMahon: To start, Montrae Holland has to hurry back

To start, Montrae Holland has to hurry back
August, 24, 2011

By Tim MacMahon

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Montrae Holland's odds of starting the season opener at guard decrease by the day.

Holland has been sidelined by a sore back since midway through the Cowboys' stay in San Antonio. He's made some spot starts in his three seasons with the Cowboys, but the team certainly isn't comfortable just penciling him into the lineup without significant practice reps or preseason work.

"I think we have to see him," offensive line coach Hudson Houck said. "We have to see health-wise and we have to see how he fits in with the guys who are playing next to him. Not being able to practice is obviously an issue."

Meanwhile, seventh-round pick Bill Nagy continues to get positive reviews from the coaches for his work at left guard.

Holland was temporarily promoted after the Cowboys cut Leonard Davis, but he reported to camp in poor condition and was soon sidelined with the sore back. If he hopes for his role to change, he needs to return to the field soon.

I wouldn't start Holland when he comes back. The way Nagy is playing he should get the start.

Holland is a backup guard and nothing else.

Same, starting Holland would invalidate all that Garrett is trying to set up here. You have to earn your job.

I was looking forward to exactly this with this team going forward. I think we're all in for a little bit of a let down.
