IRVING, Texas -- The right side of the Cowboys’ offensive line was a problem last season.

Offensive line coach Hudson Houck doesn’t deny that. Maybe the solution is to replace guard Leonard Davis and tackle Marc Colombo, but Houck certainly wouldn’t say that publicly.

"It's my job now to get him playing better," Houck said of Davis. "We'll address some of the weaknesses now and go from that point."Houck’s focus is on helping Davis and Colombo perform again at the levels they had in previous seasons.

Davis had been to three consecutive Pro Bowls before last season, when he performed poorly enough to get benched during one game. Houck said the 6-foot-6, 360-pound Davis still has the size and athletic ability to be one of the league’s elite guards, but Davis must improve his technique.

“I’ve got to do a better job coaching because he does have potential,” Houck said. “He has got good size and he can still run. We’ve got to get the bending issue solved. We’ve got to get some things solved. We have identified some of the weaknesses. We’ve also identified the strengths. It’s my job now to get him playing better, so we’ll address some of the weaknesses now and go from that point.”

The best coaching in the world might not be able to help Colombo, whose biggest concern is deteriorating health, especially with his surgically scarred knees.

“That’s definitely an issue,” Houck said. “We’re not going to skirt that problem whatsoever. The knees are an issue. Now, he has already talked to [strength and conditioning coach] Mike Woicik about how he can get better core and leg strength without ruining the knees, and there are ways to do that.”

The Cowboys would be wise to prepare for Colombo’s departure. They started that process by drafting Sam Young, who has some potential, in the sixth round last season. It wouldn’t be shocking if Young ends up competing for the starting job with a rookie selected in the first few rounds in April.

Ideally, I'd like to see us draft a RT in the first couple of rounds this year and sign a LG in free agency. Then next season address LT and RG. Of course, bringing in all new guys for depth asap.
