The Dallas Cowboys have listed LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson as their top prospect entering the 2011 NFL Draft.
According to Sports Illustrated‘s Tony Pauline, Dallas’ high opinion of the 2010 Thorpe Award winner was only reinforced by Peterson’s 4.32 and 4.37 forty times at the Combine on Tuesday.
With Terrence Newman and Gerald Sensabaugh likely on their way out, Peterson is a viable athlete that has reputable skills as a cornerback or safety in the NFL. Considering Peterson is the top rated secondary player, however, the Cowboys may well have to trade up to ensure they get him.
If they lose out on Peterson, expect Dallas to make a run at Nebraska’s Prince Amukamara.
The Cowboys made another decision affecting the future of their secondary on Tuesday, informing cornerback Bryan McCann that they plan on retaining him as a exclusive rights free agent.
Teams have until Mar. 3 to label players with under three years of NFL experience and without a contract as exclusive rights free agents. In doing so they guarantee that they will receive compensation if another time offers them a contract.
McCann, a SMU product, returned an interception 101 yards for a touchdown and averaged 20.6 yard per punt return as a rookie last year. McCann also added 23 kick returns for 507 yards.
Wide receiver Jesse Holley is also expected to be retained as an exclusive rights free agent.
