Unless significant progress is made over the next six weeks and a new collective bargaining agreement is negotiated, the NFL will indeed have a lockout on March 4.
That means a halt in all team activity, as well as free agency. One certainty is the April NFL Draft, which could actually come before the free agent signing period if a new CBA isn't drafted by then.
The Cowboys have several holes to fill following a 6-10 season. Jerry Jones said this week the Cowboys won't alter their draft strategy, though, despite a potential work stoppage that could affect the offseason schedule.
“None of those areas would impact the selection of the player at the time we take him in the draft, mainly because they are going to get on the field at the same time your free agents do, or at the same time your veteran players do," Jones said. "I can tell you first hand it won't impact how we draft.
"As I’ve said, I join with 31 others that are going to do everything we can to not miss any play time. And those are our goals."
If free agency were to be delayed, however, the draft could be the most significant way the Cowboys improve their team. That's what makes this evaluation process, starting with the Senior Bowl, so critical.
