Looking at Tony Romo in the clutch

IRVING, Texas -- There is a common perception that Tony Romo struggles when it matters most. Not so much.
First, I have to give credit to ESPN’s NFC West blog maven Mike Sando for the idea that sprouted from LeBron James’ lack of clutchness (not a word, but sounds good) in the NBA Finals.
Sando got the numbers for the quarterbacks from that division, so I decided to take an internal look at the same numbers for Romo, and they are positive.
In the fourth quarters of games with a score differential no greater than seven points, Romo has completed 165-of-263 passes for 2,418 yards with 17 touchdowns and eight interceptions in his career. That’s all good for a 101.5 passer rating.
Only Peyton Manning has a better passer rating (103.7) than Romo since 2006.
Last season, however, was different. In his five games, Romo had a passer rating of just 69.7, completing 33-of-55 passes for 372 yards with two touchdowns three picks. Prior to last year Romo had passer ratings of 123.4, 105.5, 114.7 and 102.4 in those fourth-quarter situations.
