Andre Gurode has started the last 36 games at center, dating back to 2007.
IRVING, Texas - As if the Cowboys didn't have enough issues on the offensive line.
After allowing six sacks last week to the Titans, and accounting for half of the team's 12 penalties, the offensive line suffered another blow, a potentially a big one, if Andre Gurode can't play Sunday.
The Pro Bowl center left practice and underwent an MRI for a knee injury that he initially injured in last week's game, but wasn't deemed a big problem until the start of Thursday's practice.
"Now he practiced full (on Wednesday) and had a good practice," Phillips said. "But he couldn't go. We're going to check on it. I think he was just sore. He came out and wasn't ready."
Phillips said starting left guard Kyle Kosier would slide over to center, the contingency plan the Cowboys use on game days to save a roster spot. But even knowing Gurode's injury now, it appears Kosier would start instead of rookie Phil Costa, who did get a few snaps as well.
That scenario would have Kosier start at center, a position he's never played during his nine-year career, and Montrae Holland would play at left guard.
Still, Phillips said it's early to rule out Gurode.
"Now walking off the field, he said, 'I'm fine, I'm fine,'" Phillips said. "But he couldn't go, so we'll see how fine he is. We'll look at it and see, and see how he feels (Friday) and so forth. I can't predict all that."
Clearly, this wouldn't be a good time for another offensive line injury, especially at center, where all the pre-snap calls and adjustments are made. With the deafening noise at the Metrodome, it would be quite a task for any player, Kosier, Costa or even the experienced Gurode, to face that crowd, along with the combination of Pat Williams and Kevin Williams.
"It's going to be a challenge, at any position on the line," Phillips said. "They've got a real strong front four and they play well at home."
If Kosier indeed has to start at center, it will be his first action at the position. Phillips said Kosier has received some snaps in practice, but as much as the backup usually gets.
"It's off and on," Phillips said. "But not in all the drills. It's like a backup quarterback. You're not going to get as many snaps."
