With Tyron Smith getting drafted and we’re just going to assume Doug Free is re-signed this offseason because he will be, the only question mark other than what side those two will play, comes down to the third tackle.
We’re also assuming Marc Colombo is not in the mix, presumably released once free agency begins. So Sam Young is the ideal candidate to handle the third tackle responsibilities. That means he would be active for each game and be the ready replacement at either left and right tackle.
Looking at the roster, that makes the most sense. But let’s not forget about Jermey Parnell in the equation. He’s easily forgettable considering he was added to the team in midseason and was never active.
But he’s definitely got the look of a tackle – 6-6, 307 – he just lacks experience. Then again, so does Young.
Without a training camp, it’ll be tough for anyone to change perceptions. That’s why these bubble guys need as many preseason games as possible. If that happens, Parnell could have a legitimate shot to compete with Young.
He’s still learning the position, being a former college basketball player. But Parnell has more athleticism and that alone could be enough to handle both sides of the line.
