Jean-Jacques and I have been debating the top 3 (non coaching) reasons the Cowboys are 1-6 for a couple days now and have come up with some good reasons and have gotten some interesting feed back from other members of the media. We are kind of curious as to what your thoughts are. JJT has posted this question on his Facebook account just now and I'm doing the same at some message boards I post at.

We want to know what you think. From the sounds of it I think JJT may do a piece on this once we get some feedback so let it rip.

Remember, reasons that have nothing to do with the coaching.

The # 1 reason why the Cowboys are in the shape their in and the shape they've been in for 15 years now is the GM. We don't have one. Just an owner pretending he is. All other reasons get trumped by this one.

Player wise, the offensive line sucks. Across the board. To the tune where a mediocre player like Doug Free is annointed as some blue chip young piece for a new line of the future by fans desperate for any kind of talent there.

We need a ball hawking free safety. Badly. And a bookend pass rusher to Ware. Spencer hasn't been it except for a 7 or 8 game stretch the end of last season. It's too easy for even the most journeyman of QBs to have a field day on this defense.

We are in great need of a couple of defensive linemen. I'd suggest a stout NT and moving Ratliff back to end. I don't care if he's an all pro. His natural position is end in this defense and we need to get bigger and stronger in the middle of this defense.

Which leads me to the inside linebackers. Brooking's at the end of the road. James isn't physical enough at the point of attack. Williams and Lee were billed as the tandem of the near future. One's now gone and the other comes with serious concerns that he'll even be able to stay on the field, not to mention how he'll play when he is in there.

It's a team with an overrated talent base. It's like we came into this season expecting to overwhelm teams on paper. But the lines are relatively weak, the defense is light in the interior and there isn't a playmaker in the last line of defense to boot.

Oh, and I don't know that we have a real starting RB on the roster. Not easy to determine with the shape of the offensive line, but I think you at least have to consider moving on from these three and finding another back capable of being the guy.

All these things don't have to be fixed in one year to contend in 2011. Look around the league. The level of play is awful.

That's a copy and paste from my conversation with Tim Cowlishaw.

1.The offensive line.Absolutely no push on running plays, they are flat out getting out manned, nearly every down. The pass blocking is okay, every so often.Horrible most of the time. So,we can't run effectively, thus we throw 2-1 vs rushing. Now some of this pass-run ratio can be chalked up to trying to come from behind, but far from all of it.The O-line stinks.
2.Ineffective pass rush. The pass rushing scheme doesn't work like it should. You should mention to JJT that the members of this board noted the Cowboys telegraphing blitzes a while back.Simms' revelation during the Jags game was no scoop. This exposes our "pro bowl" secondary(and the pro bowl).
3.The secondary is only as strong as it's weakest link.Uh oh.Scandrick should have the name on the back of his jersey changed to "Toast".Ball is no safety.Period.Sensabaugh reacts when the ball is thrown,if he's looking.Newman is Newman.
4.Romo. Conspicuous by his absence.

If I think of more,I'll add later. Now,I need coffee.

Edit:Should have waited for SBK's post.

Sbk, pretty much summed it up in that post.

Offensive line is in shambles, our safety play has been horrible. We can't run the football. So stop trying to do what you can't do.

Jerry is not a real GM. As if we couldn't figure that one out. He at least needs to step aside and allow the new head coach to make decisions on the roster.

Lack of a defined leader (coach), combined with too many distractions around the team.

By the way . . . nice of you to do JJTs homework for him. He's a complete hack.

Feel me?

Poor talent evaluation. Mainly along the offensive line and at safety.

You don't skimp on protecting your all pro QB and you don't do it with a position that has been shit since Darren Woodson and Roy Williams were a tandem.

The fact that Jerry tried to sell both Doug Free(at left tackle) and Alan Ball this year is a major indictment on his skills as a "GM"

The list of things to fix starts with the GM. You have to start there. If you don't, you go into every year with a disadvantage. The answer isn't promoting Stephen either. You've got a core of players now that for the most part is in it's prime years. If you take a shot and miss, you essentially have to blow this thing up in 4 years and start over, IMO.

Frustrating.

And in a year that you know Jerry wanted to make a run. He's the biggest homer of them all.

lol @ the offensive line and his safeties.

1. Oline.
2. The Defense can't tackle.
3. Defensive backs can't play the ball.
4. ILBs are too old and slow.
5. Special teams can't tackle.
6. Felix Jones is looking ordinary. (partly the Oline's fault)
7. Marion Barber continues to see the field. Any down with him in it, is a wasted down.

The ones in bold are due to coaching.

He'll waste Parcells' core.

In his sick mind, he thinks he already tried the Parcells way and it didn't work. And his way hasn't worked either. So he's at a loss. He's not bright enough, or his ego won't allow him to admit, that it did work with Bill. We went from laughing stock to a young contender. We needed to continue down that path. Instead Jerry practically threw a party when he left and went right back to the puppet coaches.

We have no mental toughness. No heart.

The defense came out playing pretty nasty to start the year. Then as soon as there was some adversity, they packed it in.

I think that points to no leadership at the top.

This team is made up of a bunch of pussies. It's one big ass country club where everyone just shows up every year with their jobs handed to them.

SBK nailed it.

1. Jerry Jones
2. Players with no heart, drive, hunger
3. Leadership in the locker room.

Used to be my take until I got to know him personally. Yes, he likes to stir the pot but that get's ratings, all the media does it but you might be surprised to find out that on gameday he is pretty emotional fan like the rest of us. He gets worked up and right now is just as bummed as the rest of us. The JJT you get on paper and behind the camera is not the same JJT you get in life.

I totally understand your feelings toward him though. Not trying to change anything. Just wanted to let you know what I see.

I'd have more respect for him if he "kept it real" and didn't just say things to get a reaction out of people.

He sounds like the sbk92 of journalists.
