Weeks before the Cowboys chose linebacker Bruce Carter in the second round of the draft, they brought him to Valley Ranch, along with 30 other prospects.
Those visits are an important chance for coaches, scouts and even Jerry Jones to be around the players to see what makes them tick, if they can. But the trips may be most valuable for the team because it offers an extended opportunity to check up on the athlete's capacity for learning the game.
Carter was one of the guys who apparently shined when defensive coordinator Rob Ryan put him up on the white board, as they say.
"In the beginning he taught me a couple things, like plays they will run," Carter said. "At the end he was giving a little test on what you learned in that short amount of time. I did really good in that and they were very impressed."
Carter seemed equally impreseed with what he learned about Ryan, who is known for his fiery demeanor.
"He is a fired up guy and I really love his attitude," Carter said. "He is one of those coaches that really loves to get after it and he is a players' coach. He is somebody that when you make the big play, he is going to jump up and down on the sideline with you. I just love coaches like that."
