Seriously, enough of this shit. The game is going to be pure garbage in another year or two.

NFL may prevent runners from lowering their heads into tacklers

Posted by Michael David Smith on March 14, 2013, 3:42 PM EDT

In another sign that the days of punishing, physical running backs like Jim Brown and John Riggins are coming to an end, the NFL is considering a rules change that would penalize runners for lowering their heads and initiating contact with tacklers.

Members of the NFL’s Competition Committee revealed today that they want to see a new rule that would make it a personal foul for either a runner or a tackler to engage in head-first contact with the crown of the helmet when running into each other outside the tackle box.

“This is a pure and simple player safety rule,” NFL Competition Committee Chair Rich McKay said. “We really think the time has come where we need to address the situation in space where a runner or a tackler has a choice of how to approach his opponent.”

McKay said there was no one specific play that made the Committee propose this rule change, and he said that the play that was viewed by many as the most violent example of a helmet-to-helmet hit in the NFL all season — Bernard Pollard’s collision with Stevan Ridley in the AFC Championship Game — would not have been a penalty because neither player was directly leading with the crown of his helmet.

Rams coach Jeff Fisher, a member of the Competition Committee, said he believes coaches will be able to properly instruct their players in how to adjust to this rule.

“The ballcarrier is still going to be permitted to lower his shoulder, and the head is also going to come down to protect the football,” Fisher said. “We’re not taking that part of the run out of the game. What we’re saying is, in space, one-on-one, head-up, we’re not going to allow you to load up and use the crown of your helmet. It’s an obvious thing.”

It’s obvious that each year, the NFL’s Competition Committee is going to try a little bit harder to take us closer to a time when helmet-to-helmet hits are removed from the game completely.

I would be pretty surprised if this actually gets passed. I can't imagine they'd gain enough support for it. I guess anything is possible anymore in this overly cautious new NFL.

I cannot imagine that they can break RBs of this habit. Low man wins, are you telling RBs to just stand there and take it? This is one of the worst ideas I've seen.

DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) - The NFL is changing its rules to prevent ball-carriers from initiating contact with the crown of the helmet.

It’s an attempt to make the game safer – but the league’s all-time leading rusher, Emmitt Smith, thinks the NFL should have its own head examined.

“If I’m a running back and I’m running into a linebacker, you’re telling me I have to keep my head up so he can take my chin off?’’ Smith said Thursday in an exclusive interview with Dallas radio station 105.3 The Fan. “You’ve absolutely lost your mind.’’

The NFL’s rules-making competition committee will propose this change to NFL owners at league meetings next week. At least 24 votes from 32 owners are required for passage.

“As a running back, it’s almost impossible (to not lower your head),’’ said the Dallas Cowboys legend. “The first thing you do is get behind your shoulder pads. That means you’re leaning forward and the first part of contact that’s going to take place is your head, regardless.

“I disagree with the rule altogether. It doesn’t make any sense for that position. It sounds like it’s been made up by people who have never played the game of football.’’

And Emmitt would be 100% correct.

Just settle already within reason with every broke money grubbing player begging for a hand out because of their supposed post football mental issues. Raise the pensions for former players and make every new player sign a waiver form before setting foot on any field and be done with the moronic direction the game is headed. No pun intended.

I thought there was no way that would ever pass.

I can just imagine it next year, Demarco bounces one out and gets a big first down, London Fletcher goes low in the open field so Murray gets lower....boom, 15 yard personal foul for something that is fucking INSTINCT for RBs at this stage of the game.

Can't believe it.

It's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Imagine what a player like Earl Campbell thinks. He lead with his helmet a lot.

I can absolutely see this happening.

I feel like this is the beginning of the end of my interest in football. The past few years it has been hard to swallow some of the rules changes, but I can't imagine it being more ridiculous than this. I think it's all downhill from here.
