Assuming the Cowboys keep the 14th pick in the upcoming draft, it will be the first time in franchise history to draft from that spot in the first round.
When you’re dealing with the middle of the first round, obviously anything can happen. It’s high enough to get a superstar. But not high enough to consider him a can’t-miss-player. If he was, 13 other teams wouldn’t have passed.
So it’s a tricky pick for sure and just by judging the last 10 players selected at No. 14, you’ve got your share of studs, mainly one in the best cornerback in football. But for the most part, there are some duds, too.
Seems like the last 10 years warns us for “buyer beware” with this pick.
2011 – Robert Quinn, DE, St. Louis
2010 – Earl Thomas, S, Seattle
2009 – Malcom Jenkins, CB, New Orleans
2008 – Chris Williams, OT, Chicago
2007 – Darrelle Revis, CB, NY Jets
2006 – Brodrick Bunkley, DT, Philadelphia
2005 – Thomas Davis, LB, Carolina
2004 – Tommie Harris, DT, Chicago
2003 – Michael Haynes, DE, Chicago
2002 - Jeremy Shockey, TE, NY Giants
The only great player in this group is Revis. Oddly enough, he’s the only player drafted by an AFC team. That’s just a coincidence I think, that just one AFC team has held the 14th pick in the last 11 seasons. Now it’s still early on a few of these guys. Jenkins and Thomas are pretty good players.
But it definitely sounds like the Bears are happy not to have this 14th pick.
