By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

If you want to be convinced that Monte Kiffin is the right man for the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator a call, just give Larry Lacewell a call.

That’s something that Jerry Jones does on a regular basis, by the way.

Lacewell, the former Cowboys scouting director who remains a member of Jerry’s unofficial advisory committee, readily admits that he has a “man crush” on the 72-year-old Kiffin. The Cowboys met with Kiffin at Valley Ranch on Thursday, and Lacewell assumes his old friend will officially become Rob Ryan’s replacement soon.

“Frankly, I think it’s the best hire the Cowboys have ever made,” Lacewell told ESPNDallas.com on Friday morning. “Well, other than Jimmy [Johnson].”

Lacewell completely dismisses the mediocre results Kiffin got as the defensive coordinator on his son Lane’s USC staff, saying Kiffin did the best he could do despite talent issues that stem in part from NCAA-sanctioned recruiting restrictions. Lacewell, who visited USC last summer during an off day in the Cowboys’ training camp, said Kiffin is as passionate and energetic as ever.

In other words, Lacewell believes Kiffin is still the same guy whose defenses were dominant during his 13-year tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Kiffin was considered a legendary NFL defensive coordinator when he left Tampa to join his son in the college ranks.

Tampa Bay ranked among the NFL’s top 10 in scoring defense 11 times and total defense 12 times under Kiffin. The Bucs were top five in both categories six times, including a double No. 1 overall rank during their Super Bowl championship season.

“To fall into Monte Kiffin is just a gift,” said Lacewell, who used Kiffin as a sounding board when Mike Zimmer copied his scheme with the Cowboys. “To pull this off is just a coup. Whoever thought of this was real smart.”

Ah, the coveted Larry Lacewell Seal of Approval. That settles it then.

Ya know, Barry stole Larry's wife.

I often wonder if Larry tanked all those drafts just to stick it to ole Barry.

If Jerry wants to know what not to do then he needs to listen to that idiot.

So it was Lacewell's idea then. Great.

lol

My thought exactly.

I was listening to Pat Jones on the radio this morning. He's an old Arkansas guy who has known Jerry and Lacewell and that whole crew forever, of course coaching with and for Jimmy at Okie State and the Dolphins. He said this was a pure Jerry move. Said Jerry has known Kiffin since he coached at Arkansas for Lou Holtz in the 70s. Said nothing against Garrett, he's a smart guy, but he's nothing but a playcaller at this point. Said he thought that if Jerry initiated this, it could be iffy as to Kiffin's energy level and so on. If Kiffin's people called Jerry and he's highly motivated, it'll probably work out just fine.

He did also say that Kiffin puts a heavy emphasis on fundamentals where Rob was more of a "scheme guy". Which also reflects what Jerry was saying even a while ago.

FWIW.

The weird thing is that they were both interviewed together for the "Jimmy Johnson: A Football Life" special. They were cracking jokes like they were the best of friends.

As much as we all pile on Lacewell, most forget Jimmy loves Lacewell too. Especially for his views on defensive strategy.

I wanted Kiffin since he was a defensive quality control coach for the ICFL in 1935.

I see what he's planning on building.

Peyton has one Super Bowl in the last 14 years. There are other ways to build a team obviously.

Barry Switzer's friend circle seems to consist of the big idiots on the planet.

Lol, so let me get this straight, with the privilege of hindsight you'd rather have this:

and this:

over Manning & whatever he might have brought to the team had he been drafted?

I would and I'd be thrilled if all he was able to do was add trophy #6 and presumably many winning seasons.

Having said that, Jerry Jones would have probably found a way to fuck it up had they had the balls to pull the trigger

Bingo. Hindsight tells me that Jerry would have stuck it out with Jim Mora about 3 seasons longer before handing it over to Norv, Wade and Garrett in whatever order you fancy. All the other personnel moves would have gone about the same too.

There's a reason Peyton chose Fox over Ken Whisenhunt and Crennel.

One led freakin Tebow to the playoffs while the other two are now unemployed. Coaching seems to matter to everyone but our GM and "true diehard fans".

makes me want to puke... I'm surprised some psychologist hasn't tried to make a name for himself by writing a book about the narcissism of Jerry Jones

I think this is one of the worst hires the Cowboys have ever had. I am sure 72 year old has-been can relate to today 20 year old football players. What do i know right. Jones and Garrett are the experts!

Old coach, working for his son, is called out of semi-retirement by Jerry Jones and moves to Texas for a last hurrah under the Big Top!

It could be a made-for-TV movie starring Ed Asner.

(When will this become a serious franchise again?)
