Lane Kiffin says it’s “almost impossible” to win with Al Davis
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 26, 2011, 3:35 PM EDT

When Al Davis fired Lane Kiffin as coach of the Raiders three years ago, Davis said Kiffin was a “disgrace to the organization.” Kiffin says the real disgrace is that the organization is led by an owner who demands control but can’t get out of bed in time to get to work.

In an interview with ESPN.com, Kiffin said he doesn’t see how a coach can win in the current climate in Oakland.

“It is almost impossible,” Kiffin said. “I don’t know why I didn’t listen, [because] so many people told me that. That’s why, if you ask [University of Washington coach Steve Sarkisian], he didn’t go. He had a chance to go. You’re just so far behind other clubs. You’re waiting for [Davis] to wake up and come to work at 2 o’clock in the afternoon to make decisions that the rest of the league is making at 6 o’clock in the morning. You’re still running videotapes over to the hotel so he can watch practice at night.”

Kiffin, who’s now the head coach at USC, sounds like he feels more pity than anger toward the 82-year-old Davis.

“It was sad, really, to see somebody who’s accomplished so much in his career and been such a powerful figure in the NFL,” Kiffin said. “To see that was actually pretty sad to watch.”

“Sad to watch” pretty well describes football in Oakland over the last several years.

Race ahead 10 years and Garrett will be saying the same thing about our owner.

While I agree that Jerry Jones is Al Davis Junior, Garrett would never say that. Too classy, too loyal. Would take an outsider (like Kiffin was) to be that brutally honest. Even Jimmy is much more politically correct now when talking about Senator Palpatine, err Jerry. Go back and watch some ESPN coverage from a few years back and Jimmy was much more honest.

What exactly did Jimmy say a couple of years ago that was so much more honest than what he says now, he has always said Jerry did not meddle as much as people claim.

Its amazing the length people will go to just to get a shot in on Jerry.

An owner/GM will probably never produce a Lombardi, even one that knows personel better than most owners like Jones does. To his credit, he's evolved from the Dave Campo days and has a better eye for talent now. With all that, it's not enough for an owner to "not meddle as much as people claim". He shouldn't meddle at all.

Watch the ESPN Special "Jerry's Cowboys". Listen to the things Jimmy, the local writers, and even Jerry says. The special covers from the time Jerry bought the team until he hired Parcells.

Jimmy is much more civil now when he discusses Jerry. Also, Jimmy's first run on Fox he was extremely critical of Dallas, Jerry, Barry Switzer, etc.

Of course he wouldnt say that but its still correct. Unless something drastic happens Jerry is headed that way and I also dont have any hope with his son either.
